Title: Corpus Christi Procession 1966 Along Sussex Street in Middlesbrough a policeman watches over crowds standing along the pavement observing a large procession passing by. Featured amongst the groups taking part are Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, all marching behind flags and banner, as well as many groups of smartly dressed children accompanied by well-dressed women and in some cases nuns. Many of the girls wear white dresses with veils with some holding their hands in prayer, one girl is being pushed in a wheelchair. Following the children several adult groups including women wearing blue gowns and veils and nurses in their uniform. Coming through Queens Square several groups of men and women some of whom are accompanied by children. Behind them a religious procession featuring altar boys, two of whom are carrying candles while a third holds a large crucifix. Accompanying them another group of girls dressed in red sashes and carrying small baskets of flowers, they are accompanied by a priest. Passing under Albert Bridge coming along Exchange Place the procession continues featuring a priest walking under a canopy carrying a Monstrance. More groups of men and women follow behind slowly. Marching in lines along Albert Road, some behind their banners, several groups of men. The procession comes to a stop and a priest standing at the front appears to be reciting a Latin prayer. After a moment the procession begins moving again now passing Middlesbrough Town Hall. Now on Borough Road groups of women continue to march; one of them carries a small child. More of the procession is followed by some of the men walking through the gates of Newlands Convent School where they pass two tables onto which they throw something small. A large group of women stand watching on as the altar boys and priests along with the girls’ carrying baskets of flowers arrives. The canopy under which the priest carrying the Monstrance is turned after which he steps out making his way towards an altar erected against an exterior wall of the school. A banner above the altar reads ‘Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament.’ With the Monstrance placed on the altar the Catholic service for the Eucharist is held featuring a thurible being used to spread burning incense. An older priest in red sash kneels away from the rest of the congregation nearer to the altar in prayer. He puts on a skullcap while the congregation surrounding him sing a hymn. End title: The End
