This is a film made an amateur filmmaker from Sheffield, Jean Gray, of a family Christmas at home, featuring her son and daughter, Peter and Julie.
The film begins showing the decorations on a large department store, with a girl, Julie, looking at a Christmas tree and the toys in the store window. Back at home Julie’s mother is wrapping presents and writing Christmas cards. Two men enter carrying a Christmas tree and place it in a pot. One of the men then mixes some icing and ices the Christmas cake, and the other man places the presents under the tree. Silvery decorations hang from the ceiling and other Christmas items are on display. Peter and Julie make their way up to bed carrying pillow cases and go to sleep.
In the morning they emerge with their pillow cases full of presents. They take their presents into their father’s bedroom, where he is still in bed, and show off their presents. The boy holds up a Wolf Cub annual. The girl has a small sewing machine and a cuddly toy. The boy also has a small typewriter and the girl a small record player which they play a 45 rpm record on.
The table is set for Christmas dinner. Father carves the turkey, and the whole family sit down to eat. Several children are seated at a separate, smaller, table. They pull crackers and put on their paper hats. After dinner they collect their presents from underneath the tree. Julie gets a doll and a big kiss from her bigger brother. Later the girl has a go on her sewing machine in front of the coal fire. She then dresses her doll. Peter then has a go on his typewriter. Julie plays with a small table football set, and one of the men cracks nut with a nutcracker as they sit around chatting, all the men drinking out of pewter mugs. A couple kiss underneath the mistletoe.
