These are rushes from a promotional film, Undressing the Viking, made by Paul Richardson for York City Council. It has film of two women visiting places in York including different types of shops, the famous city walls, and the York cemetery.
The film begins with a young woman seated in an armchair. She is flicking through a while a young man sleeps on a settee, having fallen asleep while holding a book. Bookshelves can be seen behind him. Next is an exterior shot of Philip Martin Music Books on Walmgate. This is followed by more exterior footage of the Quality Used Furniture Company on Picadilly.
Then there are views over the city walls and of the river. Two women walk along the city wall, past Grays Court Hotel where there is a function in the garden. They climb over the fence and go down the steps to join them.
A group of people are sitting outside the Hairy Fig café and shop on Fossgate. Follwing this, the two women are in the decorated alley of J W Knowles stained glass shop. Here a woman waves from an upstairs window, beckoning them in.
There is more footage of the women joining the party at Grays Court Hotel. They change into more suitable party wear behind flowers.
Further exterior shots include the ‘Love Cheese’ shop on Gillygate. The two women stop here to have lunch in the garden which backs onto the city walls.
The final shots show the women as they have a picnic and go for a stroll in York Cemetery.
