This is a film from the Alan Neal collection of films of Scarborough, which show many of its most popular places from the late 1960s, as well as providing a glimpse into everyday life and visitors enjoying the attractions. It includes the Scarborough Carnival and posters of popular acts playing at Scarborough.
The film begins in an open space near houses on a sunny day, where some women in bikinis stand by a large collection of coloured balloons. There is a man dressed as Merlin, and two orange three wheeled cars with the bodies lifted up (registrations 030 PY and 336 PY). It is the start of a carnival and adults and children are in fancy dress, including some as black and white minstrels. There is a float for Scarborough Technical College Canoe Club. Dressed in a pair of shots, Jimmy Saville stands with a bicycle. Other participants include those dressed as the Flintstones and as bees. There is a brass band dressed in blue tops and green berets and adorned with badges and medals. A line of men, presumably carnival judges, take notes. Miss Scarborough sits on top of a float and waves to the camera. The carnival sets off, and among the floats is one for the Scapino Ballet. A woman holds a placard advertising “Wife swapping” at the Library theatre. A crowd watches as marionettes pass by followed by the rest of the carnival, including Roscoe School of Dancing, dressed as black and white minstrels, 2B’s night spot, a Highland band, dancers in minstrel outfits, and a float for England World Cup 1970. The marionettes reach the end of the march.
The film switches to show a small boy running on the beach and some ladies having tea in a room with cricketing photographs on the walls. A couple are led up the stairway in the Grand Hotel where there is a tour of its architectural features and a display of wedding gowns.
There is a brief look at the War Memorial before a collection of photos and posters are shown of popular acts playing at Scarborough, including Fred (“rubber face”) Parrot, Les Dawson, Tommy Cooper, the Bachelors, Morecombe and Wise, and posters for Frankie Howerd, Max Faffa, the Black and the White Minstrel Show showing at The Futurist Theatre. Then on to a German Bier Keller, the ‘Schloss Neuschwanstein’, where customers are having drinks and dancing, with a band playing, and also singing at tables.
This is followed by some images of paintings of stormy seas and other historic scenes in Scarborough. The day trippers board a West Yorkshire coach bound for Scarborough. Finally, Tree Walk Wonderland and Peasholm Park are shown at night with lighted figures and other illuminations.
