Intertitle – Whitsuntide Procession
The procession makes its way up a street in a housing estate. One banner has ‘S.H.M.S.S’ written on it, another ‘Stocksbridge Congregational Sunday School’. They assemble in front of the Co-op. where a brass band plays and they all sing. They then march off again to a field on a blustery day, where some put down their banners. Here they again sing, watched by people stood at the side.
The film switches to a group disembarking from a coach, and then walking around an empty fairground on a wet and windy day. Now at the sea front, Blackpool Tower can be seen in the distance. They make their way into the fair, laughing at the cameraman as they pass, and are then seen back on the coach.
Intertitle – Deepcar Church Garden Party
People are gathered in a school field, where the May Queen is then seated on a stage with her attendants. The vicar makes a speech. People buy raffle tickets and there is a children’s fancy dress competition. Some bring decorated bicycles. There are more speeches and the May Queen is crowned and makes a speech. People mill around the stalls and let balloons off. There are various games, including hammering 6’ nails into timber. Some children are on the double swings, while others drink pop and play games.
Intertitle – Research Fund Effort
People are putting out stalls and raking the grass in a field in preparation for the event. One stall has many flowers and potted plants. A man makes animals out of balloons, while in a tent, women make a large pile of sandwiches. A boy paints a white line in the grass, and children man stalls. A woman is presented with a bouquet. There are various games, such as smashing crockery and pedalling on a racing bicycle on a stand, measuring speed, while nearby cows watch. Children have their own games, and some eat ice cream.
Intertitle - Children’s Sports
Children arrive in fancy dress at the sports event being held in a stadium. They assemble in a ring where the judges organise them. One boy dresses as a golliwog. Then the small children have a big race, followed by an egg and spoon race. Next comes a girls’ sprint, and the film finishes with a mixed adult race.
