Commentary by James E Clark
A sign gives the dates as 23rd – 26th May 1965. As visitors look around the steam exhibits, the commentary states that this is the South Yorkshire Steam Engine club holding their 3rd steam engine rally and old time fair. One of the aims is to raise funds for charities, and there is a minivan for Meals on Wheels. A woman gives a last minute clean to her traction engine. A young lad in overalls holds an ice cream in each hand. There is a large collection of machines in the engine park. The judges go around examining the machines, giving a prize to the ‘Prince of Wales’. The best tractor prize went to ‘Pandora’, owned by Mr A Furnley of Castleford, who is seen polishing his tractor. A Gavioli steam organ arrives, being pulled by a traction engine, a Foster, made by L C Bass & Son of Little Weighton, which won the best showman’s prize. The engines, all in a line, get fired up. A small boy breaks coal for one of the engines. There is a recently purchased engine, Britannia, ready for renovation. Many of the engines are shown, giving the names of their owners, and what they were used for. A large crowd watch them as they parade around the ground, while the commentary provides information on the machines. One machine drives farming equipment. The Gavioli is heard and is shown up close. Then come some vintage cars.
At the old time fair there is a steam driven ride, steam yachts, with star and stripes and Union Jack flags painted underneath. Then there is the cake walk and Bishops Rock and Roll Ride, both packed. Then there is a carousel, and the filmmaker shows the craftsmanship close up followed by a smaller one for children. One stall is full of goldfish. A man is selling balloons and there is a rifle range. Children eat ice creams, and some go on the model steam train. The vintage cars parade around, led by a Rolls Royce Phantom of 1929, and then followed by an Austin 7 from 1927.
Title – The End.
