The film opens with shots of the bride and groom, the groom dressed in a navy uniform. They are then joined by two young bridesmaids, and the group poses for the camera. There is a brief shot of the main table at the wedding reception, and the tiered cake has been set up near the newlyweds.
On the main street in Oulton, customers walk into the chemists. Following this a small group of people pose for the camera outside the shop.
Some of the houses of Oulton can be seen. Two men and two women pose in the entranceway to one of the houses.
A group of boys stand in field together. Some of them hold pitchforks or shovels, and there are pigs which can be seen in the foreground.
Volter and a boy pose outside of his shop, and there is more footage of the storefront.
A girl poses for the camera by a tree, its flowers in full bloom. Following this are shots of a Tudor style building, on the front of which there is a sign: EDRVS Tailor IT 1611 APR 10.
There are shots of a large house, and pedestrians make their way along the sidewalk in front of the house. The trees around the village appear in full bloom, and the film goes onto show more of the people of Oulton posing in front of their houses. A woman and a young girl pose with a dog in front of the Tea Rooms.
Now at Knowles farm, there are many cows grazing in a field. The filmmaker focuses closely on some of the cows before moving onto to film the rest of the herd in the barn. There are a few who have bullrings.
And old man and woman pose with a young girl outside of a house, and then the girl poses with her mother. The young girl poses with another elderly couple before posing with her father. They all smile for the camera.
Three children walk up a pathway in a field. The church steeple can be seen in the distance.
The Reverend Mercer and his wife pose in the church yard outside of St. John’s church. Following this is brief footage of the interior of the church, though it is very underexposed. Some of the pews can be seen as well as the stained glass windows above the altar. Another man from the church poses for the camera near some gravestones, and following this, the three children seen previously in the field walk along a path next to the cemetery.
Houses line one of the main streets in town, and some of the residents can be seen in the front gardens. Pedestrians walk along the sidewalk, and a bus drives down the road.
A policeman wheels his bicycle past The Three Horse Shoes pub. Following this is more footage of the high street where children walk along the pavement. Another woman poses outside of the Tea Rooms.
A girl tends to the plants in the back garden. There appears to be a greenhouse behind her. She picks some of the flowers and holds them up for the camera.
The film closes with a group shot of the wedding party from the beginning of the film. The group is larger this time, and they all pose, smiling for the camera.
Context
The films were all shot by John Paul Volter who was the Oulton chemist. He was originally German, born approx 1904. He died in 1968. He lived with his wife Annie Keelty in Park Lane Rothwell. They married in 1931. His name was originally Voelter and there are Voelters in Leeds in 1911. I think he moved to Oulton at around the start of World War 2, as the London Gazette entry for his naturalisation has him in Leeds as a chemist's sundriesman in 1937.

He had an only daughter, Margaret, born in 1934. She married a Neil Morison in 1958 and they had 2 children, a boy and a girl. A contact says they emigrated to Australia where she died in her 30s before John Paul died in 1968. The contact says her death "broke Volter's heart". This may explain why Volter gave the films to Alan Pearce, who lived in Oulton, and was also interested in cine photography. Alan passed them to Diane. The VHS copies were made 30 years ago. |
