Title – Filmed aboard the Bridlington Trawler
Title – “Liberty”
(The background for all titles is a map of the sea off the coast of East and North Yorkshire.)
It is a bright and sunny day, and the ship “Liberty” is out at sea. All the footage is taken from the deck of the ship. The large fishing net is being reeled in, and three fishermen stand by the central wheel of a pulley system. One man manages the main cable, and there are shots of smaller pulley wheels. All the men wear long aprons.
There is a shot directly into the water as the net appears, held up my small round flotation devices. The net is hauled aboard, and on the other side of the deck, two men work to repair another net. In the distance, there is trawler with seagulls flying around the boat.
Four fishermen cast the net over the side of the boat, some of whom have cigarettes in their mouths. There is a shot of the net in the water and farther out to sea. Other boats are visible from the deck of the trawler, and the men keep a close eye on the net and cables as they begin to reel the net back in. The net is hauled on board, and while one man holds the hanging net steady, another man releases the bottom of the net causing the fish to pour out onto the deck of the ship. Once emptied, the net is cast back into the sea, the men walking amongst the caught fish to do so.
There are shots of other boats on the water as well as close-ups of the pulley system used to control the net. The fishermen look over the edge of the boat as another net full of fish is brought in. Again, the net is pulled aboard the ship and the bottom released, spilling the fish onto the deck of the ship. The net is cast back out to sea, and a large ship can be seen in the distance. Two fishermen begin to sort through the catch of the day, gutting the fish and throwing the excess back into the sea. Seagulls flock around the ship as they do so. Another of the men then packages the gutted fish into wooden boxes. He carefully lays them in the boxes, and there are shots of what appear to be different types of fish.
Another boat can be seen in the distance, and back on board the trawler, the men haul in another net full of fish. This one seems to cause the fishermen trouble as it takes a few attempts to release the fish. After they spill onto the deck, another trawler can be seen in the distance, its nets visible on the side of the boat and seagulls flocking close by.
The weather has now turned cloudy, and there is footage of the coastline as the trawler makes its way to the docks. Fully packed wooden boxes fill the deck of the ship, and the trawler passes Flamborough, its lighthouse and white cliffs in full view. There is more footage of the deck of the ship with the sea and horizon visible in the background. Following this is more footage of the coastline, the sunlight now streaming through some of the clouds. One of the fishermen is still sorting through today’s catch, separating some of the smaller fish from the larger ones and placing them in wooden barrels. There are brief shots of the coastline and another ship in the distance before Bridlington harbour can be seen as the trawler approaches the port.
