This is a film of a children and young adult’s sports day run by the Young People’s Mission, a Christian organisation. The sports day was held at the sports field of St John’s College in Tang Hall, York. The film covers the entire day’s events of sports and shows many of those involved in the sports and just watching close up. It also shows many children have a fun time, with some filmed in slow motion, speeded up and going backwards.
The film begins in York St John’s College sports field in Tang Hall, with girls and boys having sprint races. Some of the races are shown speeded up and also in slow motion. The film observes closely many of those in attendance at the sports day who sit at the side of the track. Two girls run a three legged race on their own, followed by more three legged races and children messing around filmed speeded up. A group of children run across the field filmed in slow motion. This is followed by children going in and out of the sports club, and eating ice creams, filmed in reverse (going backwards). Some of the children pose for the camera. A line of girls lie on the grass and get into sacks ready for a sack race, followed by boys doing likewise. The boys race to the starting line.
A woman stands behind a table with the list of events, a microphone and a modern looking record deck. A group of teenagers stand around talking before there is the girl’s sack race, which starts with the girl’s lying on their backs on the grass. One of the organisers walks along with some older girls who then have a sprint race, filmed in slow motion. Then an older boy’s sprint race is filmed backwards, as well as other children walking around and larking about. Some smaller boys are shown close up, with a couple of them pulling faces. Two of the organisers are also shown close up. Then three girls laughingly tickle another girl as she rolls around on the ground.
The camera roves around the spectators as they put on their wet weather gear for the rain. Children queue up for bottles of pop drinks, while several boys are shown close up eating cakes and sandwiches, some of them filmed backwards. A boy is filmed close up drinking his Minster Cherryaid pop drink through a straw. Sandwiches are served to those sheltering in the veranda of the sports building. After refreshments they all make their way back over to the running track for a girl’s sprint race. This is followed by boy’s having a potato race and then a girl’s three legged race. Two women walk across the field carrying a clipboard and a box, followed by an older boy’s three legged race. Then there are some close ups of small children. A group of children pose for the camera eating ice creams sandwiched between two wafers. Three of the boys are all wearing snake belts. One small boy drops his ice cream on the ground.
A man with rolled up sleeves slowly makes his way across the field, smiling to the camera. Then there is a boy’s egg and spoon race, followed by older boy’s and girl’s egg and spoon races. Four older girls stroll across the field and there is a speeded up potato race, followed by some more races filmed in normal speed. There are more three legged races and comical sack races, followed by boy’s high jump. A man with a slight beard (Brian Wilson?) walks towards the camera accompanied by a teenage girl. Then there is a girl’s high jump. At the end of the events, children run back towards the pavilion, with one boy stopping to pull a face. Then the adults make their way back at a more leisurely pace. Back at the pavilion again everyone takes refreshments, with the children getting bottles of pop.
Then back to the sports events, first with girl’s long jump followed by (Col.) older boy’s long jump and then older girl’s long jump. Next comes an older boy’s sprint race, which seems to inspire a dog to run across the track and then some small girls also running across the track. After this there is a women’s walking race, followed by a men’s walking race. Then there is some adult slow cycling racing and (B&W) sack races - both including the man with the slight beard. This is followed by the adults having a game of rounders. A man then walks off carrying the loud speaker. Some boys play around in the sandpit, while some young men and women play catch with a tennis ball. With the clock on the pavilion showing that it has passed 8.30 in the evening, the group make their way off and the film comes to an end.
