Title - The unveiling of the memorial plaques in the garden of remembrance August 28th.1949 (text over war memorial)
Filmed by Todmorden Photographic Society Film Unit
The film opens with and exterior of Cragg Road, Hebden Royd, near Todmorden. Crowds line the roadside outside the Fox and Hounds Inn as the procession passes. The procession is headed by an R.A.F band; behind them march a group of army cadets. Next are the local dignitaries, and veterans with medals but in civilian clothes. A man and woman at the head of the group carry a poppy wreath. Behind the man march a group of women, also not in uniform, but used to marching. (Presumably former WAAFs/WRENS/etc.) Behind them follow more men, one carrying a blue and yellow flag of the Royal British Legion.
The parade passes in front of A. Ashworth and Sons family butchers, and the Blackburn Assurance Co. Ltd. Cars pass the parade in the other lane. St John's Ambulance officers are followed by a detachment of nurses. Behind them walk a row of St John's Ambulance Cadets and girls in nursing uniforms. Girl Guides, and Senior Guides/Patrol Leaders, followed by scouts. The parade ends with a fully manned fire engine.
The camera films the entrance to the Garden of Remembrance in Central Vale Park, Burnley Road, Todmorden. As the tail of the parade enters, including policemen, and gets ready for the unveiling. Crowds examine the gardens and flowers while waiting for the ceremony. The RAF band plays, everyone sings, and the Mayor gets up onto a podium to make a speech before unveiling the plaque. A lady lays a large wreath of flowers on the war memorial, followed by a man with a poppy wreath. There are shots of the crowded gardens, and people examine the flowers and the memorials. The crowds look at the memorial, which is also a fountain, with water lilies in the basin.
Title - They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
