This film documents a school trip of year four students to Bath in 1979 and captures some of the famous sites of the city.
The film begins looking over a schoolyard wall as a line of children clamber onto a coach. The camera pans along the bus as the children fill the seats. Now inside the bus, a child in a red jumper hides their face from the camera, but the children at the back of the bus wave enthusiastically.
Zoo - either in Bath or Bristol – A Brown Bear sniffs around its enclosure, looking for food; a camel kneels down, chewing as people look on; a lion sits behind a wire fence as the camera zooms in and out; a pair of tigers pace up and down behind the glass window of their enclosure. The camera changes position and films a small group standing behind the barrier in front of the enclosure, looking in, as the tiger paces back and forth in front of them. Shots of the monkey enclosure, then of the school children looking down into the enclosure as the monkeys play and chase each other. A pair of zebras walks away from the camera. A Malayan tapir sniffs around its enclosure. A group of seals swim and leap about in their pool before getting out and waddling towards a keeper with a bucket of food. The keeper throws food for the seals, some swim off to find the food, others sit and watch the keeper. A close up of an elephant and his trunk.
Cars and coaches drive along a street in Bath. This is followed by footage of Wells Cathedral. The camera zooms in on stained glass windows, and other areas of the Cathedral, and view of the Abbey from the gardens outside
At the seaside, children ride donkeys along the beach, with several appearing to have a race. Teachers wade about in the wet sand.
Next there is a piece of lawn, with a row of benches along the edge, Georgian/Regency building in front, with a large, rectangular frontage and jutting, various sized bits sticking out behind. The group stands outside, in front of the building, waving at the camera.
Roman Baths: close up shots of two stone faces, one mounted on a wall, one the head of a statue on display. The Great Bath; the camera is at one end of the baths, looking at a group of kids standing under the arches at the other end. Close ups of a statue of a Roman above the baths, before zooming out and returning to the kids. Beside the baths the children crouch and some trail their hands in the water, others cup their hands and pretend to drink. The baths bubble, and the camera pans across the interior of the baths.
This is followed by footage of the High Street with Bath Abbey at the top and interior scenes of the West Window in Bath Abbey. At the Royal Crescent, kids and teachers play on the lawns in front. The film ends as the School group stands on the kerb, waving and waiting for the bus, before all getting on.
