Featuring students from Bootham (all boys) School and the Mount (all girls) School, this film documents a natural history trip to Lancaster and Cumbria. The film captures the students as they visit Mallam Cove, Grange-over-sands and Arnside Knott. Throughout the students and teachers narrate their escapades and there are also humorous clips as the students mess around.
The film opens with a shot of a pathway snaking between two rock faces in Mallam Cove (North Yorkshire Moors) as the student group make their way towards Scarsdale. There are then views of a student walking beneath a towering cliff face and several of paths running between steep sided valleys. The campsite where the students are staying is then shown and there are deck chairs and a caravan on the green.
In a meadow, a student kneels beside a plant holding a microphone and states that it is unusual to find this plant in such a place, as it is usually grows in cow excrement. Shots then show students peeking out from behind headstones in a churchyard. The voice over remarks that today they decided to stop and have a picnic in the gardens of an old mill and shots show the garden which includes a small waterfall. The voice over continues stating that the film they took inside the mill didn't come out well as it was very dark and noisy, and the following shots show several parts of Mills mechanisms at work.
The next sequence opens with shots of the student group making their way along a winding country lane, and the shots have been sped up. A teacher then holds a pheasant egg up to the camera, stating that they found and that the eggs will be pierced and blown to preserve the egg shell. The next shot shows a young boy announcing that they have chosen a special person to tell everyone about Bootham School food. The following shows an older student, in the name of humour, holding a knife to the throat of a girl and she praises the food at Bootham School.
There are then views which shows a student climbing up a rock face and following shots which show others abseiling down. A voiceover states that the group are in Lancaster and have come to visit the old priory church and castle. A shot shows the church's exterior, before a teacher gives a voiceover giving details about the church's history.
Views from the top of a peak then shows a glorious oblique landscape and students shadowy figures can be seen enjoying the glorious sunset. At Jenny Browns point, there is a view of a lone stone turret, before a shot shows a person climbing a stone wall. An elevated shows the beach of Grange-over-sands (Lake District) off in the distance, while the voiceover says that on the Tuesday they travelled to Arnside Knott (Cumbria) to view wildlife and insects, as well as enjoying the amazing view. Several close ups then show plants and wild straw, and this is followed by views of a hike through an overgrown area. The students then kneel in a group while the teacher talks about the type of ants they will expect to find on this trip.
A student is then shown running through a field carrying a camouflage rucksack and mock gun. A comedic scene ensues where he messes around with two other students and is kicked in the shin - a parody of Rambo. There then shots of a student and a teacher cataloguing some of the finds that include butterflies and other insects. Another comedic scene ensues where the students' premier a new game they've invented called 'stall ball', which involves flinging balls and catching them with a stall.
At Leyton Moss Bird sanctuary the students do a spot of bird watching and the voiceover states that so-far they have found 88 species. Following there are several close ups of insects and plants. More shots show the birds flying around the sanctuary, which is made up of long Reeds and pools of water. The sequence concludes with views of the students walking along the limestone pavement and the great rock faces around that area.
The next scene moves on to introduce members of the Bootham School film team, who, by in large, have produced many of the films in the Bootham collection. The scene features them at the campsite struggling to get to grips with a camera in comedic fashion: "Why's it so dark? Oh, I've left the lens cap on".
After a shot of the campsite, there are then several interviews with students; the first features two girls who are quizzed about their overall feelings about the trip, which are largely good and they state that they didn't intend to come for Natural History. An older woman then states that people help more with the washing up as ten years ago, as it was only her and another woman that did them. Mike Shaw, the NH trip organiser, then gives an interview saying that he feels the trip has gone well and that he has enjoyed the amount of enthusiasm towards Natural History.
The film concludes with views of the rural landscape at sun set and then the boys and girls are all shown getting on a coach and waving to the camera, with Mike Shaw bumping in the door. On board the coach there is a shot of sleeping students.
