Featuring students from Bootham (all boys) School, this film documents a natural history trip to Llwyngwril, Wales. Natural history trips were a staple trip for Bootham students and this film includes trips to the beach, Harlech Castle and the centre for alternative energy. There are several humorous scenes and a running commentary throughout. Title – The BSBHS Film Dept. presents. The film opens with animation of a bus moving across the screen and the Welsh dragon appearing. Title – Y BWYTHN BACH – Wales 84. Title – Staring…B. Smith, J. Reed. A close up shows a map of Wales and the camera zooms in on a region called, ‘Herioneth’. A train travels through a station and on-board we see students leaning out of the window and views of the beach from the carriage as the train rushes past. The train then stops in ‘Llwyngwril’, where the travelling students and teachers exit the train. The group walk down a road and enter site where they will be staying. There is a brief shot of tent in a garden before the filmmaker cuts to a view of a setting sun. In the campsite, students one at a time exit a tent. A shot of a sign reads, ‘Castle Harlech’, and there are many views of the castles old stone walls, turrets and a view of the town from above. The group march down a road wearing waterproofs; stopping on some cliffs above the sea the filmmaker captures shots of the surrounding peaks and open countryside. The group then stop and a teacher holds up a flower to show the group, before a man walks through a small stone tunnel and emerges, standing before the camera. The man then walks down a rocky slope, pausing to lift up a rock for the benefit of the camera. Several shots then show the man picking up bits of litter around the beach, and some of the items include jeans, a sock and some packaging; he then comes across a human foot belonging to an unseen student. After a lengthy sunset scene, a close up shows a vehicle that has, ‘centre for alternative energy’, written on the door panel, and then a board that has the heading of, ‘Village of the future?’. There are then views of the exhibits at the centre and these include water filtration and pumping devices, gardens and a solar centre. Several shots then show the students standing around a teacher who, in the next shot, is captured sleeping in an arm chair with a book in his lap. After another sunset, a group of people enter a minivan preparing to drive off, and there are views of students walking along a station platform. A close up then shows a plaque that states that the building they visited was the first to be acquired by the National Trust (part of the Dinas Oleu coastline in wales acquired in 1895). Next, there are views of a river that runs into the sea from an elevated position and shots of the students standing around the teacher while he takes a picture. The students then walk down country roads, making their way through the countryside. The sun sets again, and on the start of a new day the filmmaker captures a sign that reads, ‘Compost toilet’. This is followed by a view of the campsite, which, using fast motion, shows the students moving around at speed. A shot of a boy reclining on a tree trunk is followed by a close up of a ‘Kodachrome 40’ manual. A boy orders an ice cream from a shop, before a close up of a hand written notice reads, ‘safe ways of recycling human waste must be developed’. The last sequence contains the students enjoying an outdoor meal as well as taking a dip in the sea. The film concludes with the sun setting on the horizon.
