This film documents a garden party in Ampleforth near York. Although in the midst of an outbreak of Scarlett Fever, the event still features guests having a meal, dressing up and generally having a jolly time.
The film opens in Ampleforth with a shot of people converging on a green. A close up of a picture of man with a moustache - presumably of some stature within the school's establishment. An elderly gentleman stands outside a pavilion addressing the large crowd that have assembled. He then shakes hand with another man, and the picture can be seen on an easel behind them. Shots then capture some of the guest chatting amongst themselves and smiling at the camera. The final shot in this sequence shows a woman pouring a drink at a refreshments table with several men standing around.
The next sequence features young boys and girls in a swimming pool with adults, and one shot captures several of them as they dive into the pool. Moving on, the action returns to a garden where a table has been set out with several people sitting around it. Two girls then walk towards the camera with rags (presumably to avoid infection) over their mouth, carrying drinks and plates. The following sequence shows the guests enjoying their al-fresco meal. A close up then shows a board which reads, 'Old scholars please read! We have a case of Scarlet Fever so no meeting between boys and girls indoors or out'.
A close up shows a woman eating a slice of victoria sponge cake, before a panning view shows the garden party in full swing with people moving around a large canvas tent. More views show the guests enjoying tea time and there is a shot of a young man wearing a light striped suit with a lion crest on his breast pocket; he spots the camera and holds his hand up to his face. A close up then shows a man holding a baby up to the camera, before a man speaks into a brass megaphone and listeners laughs. People are then shown dressed up in fancy dress, with one person wearing a monkey mask. A group of girls then stand around in period clothing and perform a brief dance. The film ends with a shot of the garden party taken from a distance.
