This film is from the Gordon Riley collection and follows the Guiseley Brass Band through rehearsals as well as to a win at a competition in Cumberland. Title-Men of Brass Title-A Nodrog Film Title-Music by Guiseley Brass Band. A sign for Guiseley Brass Band has been pinned up onto a wall. Two men walk into a room and read a poster which reads `Spring Brass Band Festival of Great Britain Saturday, 26th May, 1962'; in another room, the brass band practice gets under way as the members file in and take their places. The camera pans around the room to capture the boys and men of all ages playing: trumpets, trombones, tubas, and French horns. There is a long sequence of shots of the band practicing under the guidance of the conductor. There are close ups of the musicians fingers, faces and feet. Title-Contest Day A town square is busy with vans and cars full of musicians arriving to take part in the competition. There are point of view shots taken from the front of a car as it makes its way along a country road. Title-Belle Vue. Men, women and children wander around an amusement park and there are shots of some brass band members walking around in a group. There are shots of the stalls, the zoo animals (hippo, elephant), and a boy from the brass band having a go in the small boats on the lake. Following that are shots of some of the younger members having a smoke and then practicing with their instruments. A large banner has been strung up across the entrance of a centre; it reads `Brass Band Contest, Cumberland'. Inside the building are hundreds of instruments lined up against the walls and in piles; spectators sit around on wooden chairs. The next section shows the Guiseley Brass Band returning to their club house with a trophy which they pass around and drink from. The final shot is of the trophy on show on a table.

Firmly making its mark on Manchester’s history, Belle Vue Zoo’s brass band competitions began in 1853. With the combined lure of exotic animals and the battle of the bands, the event attracted over 16,000 people, making it one of the biggest attractions in the North West.  In 1922, the ‘Belle Vue May Contests’ were introduced, later renamed in 1952 as the ‘Spring Brass Band Festival’. The Grand Shield; top prize at this particular event, remained the most important of all titles.
