The film opens with a shot of a mime standing on a busy street outside a grand pillared building in Leeds. The mime holds a wooden chair, lifting it up and peering through the wooden slats, as if it were prison bars. Other mimes begin to work the same area in close proximity, replicating his performance with the chairs. Giving up, the protagonist mime takes a rest and shakes his head at the copy cats.
Inside a bathroom, the mime removes his hat at the basin and smudges his makeup in a fit of depression. In the next shot, the mimes makeup has been totally vanished, revealing the worn face of a middle aged man. A telephone rings, and a wider shot reveals that he is wearing a suit and is working in a call centre. Literally chained to his desk, the man stares round in a state of confusion, as the phone continues to ring. Shots show other employees at their desks, taking calls in overwhelming synchronicity. The man stares round for a few moments before lifting the receiver to his ear.
Outside another grand pillared building, the man walks into view. He moves down the stairs, but is hindered by the still attached table. As he reaches the foot of the steps, a group of mimes appear and again perform their routine with the chairs. In a fit of rage, the man raises the table above his head and roars as he brings it down.
The man sits on ground looking at the broken table. An overweight businessman smoking a cigar looks down on him from above. The mimes then hop around and follow the business man as he turns to leave, with the man still crumpled on the floor.
