There is a shot from above looking down onto a truck on the road. The shot then cuts to the inside of the truck and the voiceover says that the driver has been a heavy goods vehicle driver for many years and he is a good driver, but it is a pity that not everybody else is too.
There are more shots of the truck driving along and then suddenly a car pulls out in front of him, and he jams on his breaks. The voiceover says that there was something wrong the breaks, and many heavy goods vehicles have defective breaks.
In the next shot is a police stop sign and the driver is waved into the side of the road. The voiceover says that the DOE are carrying out spot checks on vehicles on the road and that it is a visual check. The inspectors check the oil and fluid lines, the mudguards and the lights. Then the inspector sits into the cab to check the steering and breaks but isn't happy with the results. The inspector carries out a Chapley Test and puts a meter into the cab and drives around with the truck driver for a short distance; he fails and is off the road until it is sorted.
In the following scene many trucks are being thoroughly tested in a vehicle testing centre. The inspectors test the lights, suspension, wheels and brakes. There are some brief shots of trucks out on a busy road and the voiceover says that the breaks are constantly being used and sometimes things can go wrong. There is a diagram of how breaks work and an explanation by the voiceover. There is a shot of a tyre with some serious wear on it. There are more diagram explanations of the problems that can occur with breaks and why.
In the next scene the truck driver brings his wheels to a centre for the Trist Draper service where the man adds metal attachment to the wheel drum to prevent excess rubbing. The excess pieces of metal from the additions are cut off and the inside of the drum is smoothed down. The man carries out a variety of other adjustments and adaptations to the wheel drums.
Following this are shots of the repaired wheel drums going back into the driver's truck and the truck being driven around a busy city centre. The voiceover says they are as good as new and will reduce the sound of squealing wheel. Then the driver is stopped by the DOE inspectors again but this time he passes the test. There is a wide shot of the boss looking into the cab of all of his trucks in the yard and the voiceover says that idle trucks lose up to £60 a day. The final shot is point of view from a vehicle on the road that fails to stop when it comes up behind a bus. There is the effect of a crash!
