Title-A Castrol Film
This film opens on a wide, open road with two moped riders making their way along the road. A third moped appears in front of the camera and follows the first two.
Title-Produced by C.H. Wood (Bradford) Ltd.
In the next few shots more and more moped riders appear on the road and follow the first two.
Title-Commentary spoken by Franklin Engelmann.
The mopeds drive along narrow roads, open moor land and countryside.
Title-Film made with the co-operation of The Glasgow Vespa Club and the British Lambretta Owners Association.
As some of the mopeds come up to a pub in the middle of an open road one of the riders indicates in and they pull into the car park.
The next scene opens in Sterling Castle in Scotland where a piper walks towards the camera as he plays the pipes and the voiceover says that on May 2nd 1959 the Highland Scoot was organised by the Glasgow Vespa Club. There are shots of riders and their mopeds and the organisers, judges and a policeman gathered near a stone building on a main road. The voiceover says that the riders leave at one minute intervals and then a couple of people on a moped drive off. There are point of view shots from the moped driver as they make their way along the road into the countryside.
The riders get to the first timed stop where there are people waiting to sign the riders in and send them off again. The following shot is taken from alongside a moped and rider as they drive along a road; the voiceover says that they have encountered rain or Scotch mist. They stop at another road block and the passengers jump off to sign the log as quickly as possible. One of the women stays to have a cup of coffee while the voiceover comments on another female passenger that appears to be enjoying every minute of the rally.
The bikes are off along the route again and there are shots of country roads, mountains and Loch Long. A few sheep run along the sides of the road but one of them gets in the way and is beeped off the road. There are shots of the mopeds as they pass the lake and then arrive in Arrochar.
Lots of mopeds pull into a car park beside the lake and park up. There are shots of the riders removing heavy items of clothing, checking their mopeds and having a rest. There is a shot of them all seated in a restaurant where the voiceover says `Haggis and chips please'. Back outside and some of the riders fill their tanks with petrol. Then there are shots of many of the couples and they are all smiling.
Following this the competitors ride along a step road up a mountain. The voiceover says that on this non-stop section the riders loose points for stopping or rolling backwards. There are shots of stewards and judges watching, as the riders make their way along the section of the road. One of the competitors can't get his moped to start and is pushed by one of the men; the bike still won't start.
The voiceover says that the riders move onto Hell's Glen where the landscape is very rugged and where they have to do another test. They have to move off from one spot and drive a few yards within ten seconds; there are shots of the riders doing this. Then they continue on until they reach Loch Lomond where there are more point of view shots taken from the front of one of the mopeds.
There are more agility tests in the next section where the riders have to drive around markers and reverse into allocated spaces. There are shots of one rider squashing the marker and a judge commenting on it.
There is a shot of the `finish' banner and of the riders coming into the finishing area, gathering around to talk and signing the logs.
The film continues on to show a Lambretta competing in the Scottish Six Days Trial; the rider has got stuck in the mud. The scene cuts to shots of the riders and spectators gathered before the event. There are many riders, motorbikes, spectators and mechanics all gathered in the car park. The voiceover says that the three Lambretta mopeds are the centre of attention as they are the only mopeds to be taking part in an event with motorcycles. The next shots show the moped riders struggling up a very steep hill which is littered with large stones and then a brief shot of them repairing their muddy and damaged mopeds.
Another Lambreatta event is being held in Woburn Park, and dozens of mopeds and riders ride along the road to the grounds where the riders are wearing costumes and driving decorated mopeds. They play games that involve the moped passenger carrying water as they go over bumps, manoeuvring between sticks and a game of moped football.
Afterwards the people have picnics, cook on mini stoves, have beers and some people have a sleep on the grass. Then there are shots of the riders leaving, some with children in the sidecars.
Onto some more driving tests and the competitors ride over wooden seesaws and along planks. There is also a competition for the nicest looking moped and people polish, decorate and accessorise their mopeds for it. The final competition is to find the Lambretta Queen which involves the women riders driving their mopeds for the judges. The winners of the various competitions receive prizes from the chairman of the event. The last shot is similar to the opening shots where the mopeds and their passengers drive in convoy along the roads.
