This film documents a detective training school at Bretton Hall, West Yorkshire. The film focuses on one particular activity, which involved investigating a staged murder that took place within the grounds of Bretton.
The film opens with an expansive view of Bretton Hall from across a lake. There is then a close up of a sign, which reads 'Bretton Hall training college for teachers of Music, Art & Drama'. There are then shots of the grounds before the trainee detectives, wearing suits and long coats, walk down a path and are met by a senior instructor. The instructor, wearing a trilby and glasses, hands out scrolls to the trainees and talks through some of the activities details, while the trainees stand around listening.
The exercise begins, as the group are then met by two women, one of whom talks to the cadets, and leads them down a path. The detectives stop, and one of the detectives walks with the woman a little way into the woods. Detectives with German Shepherds then walk down a path, before more shots show the detectives talking. A photographer caries his camera - on a tripod - and sets up by a tree, taking shots of an abandoned bicycle left on the ground, while the trainee detectives watch. The group are then led towards the bicycle and inspect it closely; taking notes as the instructor lifts it up and gives out details. More shots show the dogs leading the group. An officer then helps one of the dogs climb a fence, before the group march through a grass clearing - presumably on the hunt for clues.
The trainee detectives form a line by a divot in the ground, and a senior man talks through the possible implications of such a clue. A body is then shown in a small hole, and the trainee detectives cordon off the area using tape. The photographer again takes photos of the crime scene. Around the enclosed area the detectives stand taking notes, while the senior instructor inspects the body, relaying information. A woman is briefly shown listening intently amongst the group, before the trainees move round to get a better look at the body, which has now been flipped over onto its back.
The trainees form a search line across the field, and move slowly - in unison - looking for clues amongst the grass; occasionally one of the trainees bens down to look at something. The trainees then find another clue, with the photographer taking a picture, before scouring the ground some more. They then huddle around a single tire and take more notes. The dogs and the trainees continue to search the grounds and find an abandoned car, which they then stand round and take notes, while senior men stand by the car. Again they move on, following the canine unit, which finds a man lurking around a tree. The trainees search the man and inspect the contents of his pockets, before asking him a series of questions. The final shots show the trainees continuing to search the grounds.
