This film captures a police day in Roundhay Park, Leeds, which involved a host of activities for members of the public, some of which included tents with interactive displays, police demonstrations and a cavalry show.
Title – Police day. Noon to 6 PM on Sunday 27 June, 1976
Title – Roundhay park – admission free.
The film opens with a shot of people walking through the park carrying equipment. The filmmaker then gets a close up of a sign that reads ‘Ticket holders car park’. A shot captures a West Yorkshire Metropolitan police van parked in the park. There is then a sequence that shows a police demonstration in a lake, where police divers assist an overturned boat and bring the dummy back to shore, while spectators in bathing costumes watch from the water’s edge; some of whom are fishing.
A group of children then clamour around a man who sign autographs for them. There are then views of children playing in kayaks and boats on dry land, and some sweeping views of tents erected on the green. An important looking man in a white suit then becomes the focus as he walks along by a grandstand and shakes a woman’s hands, before chatting with a man in a black suit.
There is then a shot of a sign pitched in the park that reads ‘If you’ve got what it takes…you can do a great job! Write to P.O. box 9, Wakefield now! – West Yorkshire Metropolitan police’. A caravan that has a canvas entrance has a sign that reads ‘Police careers office’; the filmmaker pans across to show people looking at a display next to the caravan, and various close ups show the display in more detail. Outside a large white tent, a sign reads ‘Accident display’, and inside is packed with visitors who interact with the various displays. One display has ‘Accident prevention dept. – The 1976 Bee campaign’ written on it, which informs the viewer of certain safety awareness precautions.
A large round dome tent, made of triangle shapes, is then shown, and a sign outside reads ‘Criminal investigation and crime prevention’. Inside the tent there are various displays with headings such as ‘Vandalism’, ‘Homicide’ and ‘could your child have done this’. The visitors mill around in summer wear looking at the various displays. Kids then line up to have their finger prints taken from a man, who then hands a young boy a card. Close ups are then used to capture a board with different mug shots, and the board has a heading that reads ‘Photo-fit competition’. Visitors then look at a police land rover, and an officer shows a group of people some medical equipment. Children then sit on a police motorcycle.
A female police officer takes notes as a young boy in a white shirt holds a bicycle. Officers then eat around a table by a police van, and close ups show an officer tucking into his meal. Several shots then capture a communications antenna, before the show starts; in the middle of a field a marching brass band play, while rows of spectators can be seen in the background. Various shots show the crowd enjoying the performance from the stands, before the marching band move off, and officers in white gym outfits run out and perform gymnastics – vaulting over a pummel horse.
A commentator is captured sitting in a booth above - speaking into a microphone. Mounted officers carrying flags then move in the centre of the green space, and perform synchronized arrangements, while a brass band play from the side-lines. Next, dog handlers show off their canine’s skills, as they move through obstacle courses and hunt down men acting as criminals.
There is then a performance that shows a bank robbery; a brown car pulls up by the stands, and a group of criminals head inside a pavilion that has a ‘bank’ sign. They run out and drive off in their car, and then a chase ensues with police vehicles following them around the green, before a man is taken down by a dog. A man in a white suit then signs autographs, before the film returns to the performance area, where a simulated crash takes place. A police motorcycle rider arrives on the scene followed by other police vehicles, and the policemen proceed to sort out the altercation.
There is a brief view of children eating ice lollies on the green, before the police vehicle parade around the green, followed by the marching band. The final shots show officers saluting senior officials on a podium as they march past, before the very final shot shows mounted officers trotting past the camera.
