This is a film from the Taylor family collection. It shows scenes from the early years of the two children from the 1930s, playing in their garden, and the whole family on holiday at Scarborough on the beach.
A small boy, of about 5 years old, is sitting at the table at home in the kitchen eating his dinner. Afterwards he pats his tummy to show how full he is. He is then out in the snow walking hand-in-hand with his older sister. They are playing in the snow near some iron gates. The film switches to the two of them sitting on a rock on a beach in the sun. They are joined by their father, who splashes about in the sea with his daughter. An elderly woman, fully clothed and in sunglasses, walks past the camera. The two children play with some seaweed they have found on the beach. Their mother lies out on the sand, taking in the sun. They take a walk along the seafront wall, peering over the edge. The film switches again to the family sitting under a tree in a field in the sun. There is a pig with her piglets. Butterflies, bees and other insects are filmed feeding on the flowers. The boy is being given an up and down ride on a gardening instrument by a gardener.
The father drives up towards the camera, and then a woman poses by the car with the two children hanging out of the window. The two children are then playing tennis with the woman. The boy plays with a bow and arrow in the garden of a house. They are then still in the same garden back in the snow. The boy rolls a large snowball. Back again in the summer, a woman comes out of the house skipping. She is then joined by the small girl, who takes over skipping, followed by a man who also has a go skipping. The young girl then appears in the garden dressed in 18th century costume with a wig and fan. She pulls some faces for the camera. She is joined by her brother, similarly dressed, and they do a dance together. The two of them then stand for the camera in their normal clothes, before they are seen out walking along a beach, possibly Bridlington. They are joined by their mother.
Back in the garden the boy is watering the plants. The two of them are filmed up close and the boy tries to play golf in the garden. Other members of the family join in, playing with golf clubs on the garden lawn. The two children play on a home-made see-saw. A man pushes a petrol lawn mower around the garden, accompanied by two boys and two girls. He allows two of them have a go with the lawn mower on their own. Nearby there is a cow and her calf. The two children play with a kite in the garden.
Back in winter, the two children shovel snow and then make snowballs with a woman, who poses with the two of them. Now joined by their father, they make a snowman. Then, joined by two more women, they have a go on a sledge. With the snow gone, but still in winter, the two children jump up and down to get warm. They clamber over a rockery, being given a helping hand by a man. They all then set off for walk down a country lane. They arrive at a chicken shed where the boy has a look around. The two children are then riding bicycles down a muddy path, the girl getting a helping hand from her mother. Later the girl is seen riding her bike in the garden on her own. They then do some skipping, before a man in golfing gear is shown practices his swing.
Next they are relaxing in a garden in the summer with lollies. The boy waters the garden with a hose and then plays on his own with a bat and ball. Two women and three children walk across a field and the children, each in summer hats, pick flowers. On another occasion, four women are joined by two men and the two children to pose for the camera. Then two men make silly faces, one wearing a comical wig. The whole group are having fun.
Again back in the garden, first the girl, and then the boy, sit inside a toy car. Back in winter, the boy pulls a sledge along in the snow, and tries to slide down a snowy slope. Later the two children get pulled along on the sledge by some adults. They also get pulled over an iced up pond by two men on skates. They are joined by the whole family on the ice. The boy and girl then have a go on the sledge on their own on a muddy path, before the two of them take it in turns to drives along it in their toy peddle car. The girl has a go riding over the mud on a small tricycle. They play on a frozen puddle in their Wellington boots.
Intertitle - Taylor Family - Home and Holiday 1936-1937
The boy and girl are feeding some swans in Peasholm Boating Lake. Joined by other members of the family they walk over a bridge going over the lake. Back on the beach the boy and girl each have a bucket and spade, and are joined by a woman. They walk over some rocks and look in the pools of water. In the background is another beach with a miniature railway running just above it. Next they are in peddling boats on the boating lake. Then the girl and boy are both on tricycles in a cycling ground. The family are then at a caf? overlooking the boating lake and boating house. There is a mock naval battle on the lake. Later the two children feed ducks on the lake, and then play with a model boat. The boy has a drink at a water fountain.
Back on their beach the family has some fun and games playing with a ball, and then paddling in the sea. They take a walk along the sea front. The family then have a walk around Whitby, including the harbour and along the top of the cliffs, and then go up a lighthouse. The film then shows the miniature railway on the North Bay at Scarborough, before going down to the harbour in among the moored fishing boats. Some fishing boats, and a speed boat, are then shown a little way out to sea, filmed from on top of one the pier lighthouses. From a boat out at sea a large tourist boat can be seen, with the Grand Hotel at Scarborough in the background. Other boats also pass by, with Scarborough behind them. A sailing boat comes into harbour, and then they are back walking over the rocks on the sea shore, and on the beach.
The film returns to them sailing their model boats on Peasholm Boating Lake. Next they are sailing along the coast on a holiday boat. Then the two children and the woman have a go on the water chute at Northstead Manor Gardens in Scarborough. They are then filmed on the beach from high up on the cliff top, and then close up, before the two children and their father go on the small boating lake at Scarborough. Then with other members of the family they walk around Peasholm Park and go on a rowing boat on the boating lake there. The children play with the ducks near to where one of the big model ships is moored. This time they go on a paddle boat with their mother.
Back at the beach the children slide down some steps into the sand. With their buckets and spades they go off looking for things in the rock pools. They paddle in the sea and play on the sand with their mother and another woman. Back in their garden they play with another small girl. They roll down a grassy bank, and with three woman go for a walk in the country. The children play cricket in the garden. Four children, two women and a man (probably cousins, uncle and aunt) all pose as a group for the camera. Other women present also pose in the latest fashion in shorts. The girl, riding her bicycle, pulls the boy, sat in his toy car, along with a rope.
The film then switches to show three women sitting on chairs on a pavement in front of a picture shop, as a car comes down the road being waved to by crowds on both sides - possibly carrying King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
In the garden two younger children - perhaps their younger selves - are helping to plant a couple of trees. Back as their older selves, the two children are out in the countryside, before they are with a large group of other boisterous children at a party. The children are all jumping up and down in their party outfits, and then have a dance. The film comes to an end with the children waving and shouting.
