Title - Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor club present - Fourth High Peak Sporting Trial, 27th October 1949.
Filmed by Hodgsons Camera Shop 5, Cambridge Arcade, Sheffield.
Intertitle - At the Rising Sun
A man and a woman are peering under the bonnet of a racing car (DHS 758) pointing at something on the engine. Someone then gets under the jacked up car.
Intertitle - Zero Hour Draws Near. First Man Off.
At the start of the trial the first car is flagged off, and it pulls out of a car park onto a normal road.
Intertitle - 94 more to go
More cars pull out watched by a crowd by the entrance. Later, in a field, the racing cars are parked up at a new starting point, with drivers and spectators standing around talking. The Marshall talks through a microphone and waves off the cars one-by-one. The drivers of one of the cars (KWA 166) stop for a chat. Someone lights a match with the bonnet open (presumably checking for fumes). One car (KWJ 247 number 24) has a small girl and her mother on board.
Intertitle - Bamford Clough
As they go along one section of the course the passengers jump up and down to get more traction on the mud. A sign states 'Observed Section Begins'. Again, more jumping up and down as the cars pass through a narrow muddy path. A woman Marshall in a striped coat sets them off.
Intertitle - Old Leeds
The cars go up a muddy moorland path and have to turn right before a dry stone wall, with one car gong straight into it. A man radios ahead from a radio car. Just at the point where the cars have to turn many of them get stuck in the mud.
Intertitle - Greenhope
Another sign states, 'Observed Section Begins'.
The cars try to make their way up more steep muddy inclines, often, despite desperate jumping up and down, failing, and have to turn back and go another way.
Intertitle - Pindale
The cars are parked up in a field, with one of the women Stewards on the phone. The cars then pass the place where they have to stop and reverse before proceeding. One car has broken down, smoking, with a pickup truck ready to tow it away. The cars make their way along a narrow path with dry stone walls on either side.
Intertitle - Cowlow
The cars go up a very steep rocky path, with lots of twists and turns, with the spectators following in the rain. One car has gone off the track and is surrounded by spectators, who push it back onto the track.
End credit - We thank the marshals for their kind co-operation.
