Title - Orford Films presents -
Title - Through central Europe to Budapest.
Ttile - Produced J.W.Gillott.
Title - What is more fitting that to commence our holiday in "Europe's playground" at lovely Montreux?
An expansive view shows a river surrounded by trees and a town situated in the background. On a street in Montreux, a tram rolls down the street and a woman hurries catch it. A traditional steam ferry sails in towards the dock at Montreux, and two sailors wait on the pier as it arrives.
Title - The steamers offer an easy way of exploring Lake Geneva.
A large group of holidaymakers walk down a pier; many wear sun hats and smart clothing. The camera, now aboard the ferry, captures the hilly scenery, the grand architecture and a passenger who makes adjustments to her camera.
Title - The famous Chateau de Chillon.
A shot of verdant hills and chateaus taken from the boat is quickly superseded by a sequence of musicians playing violins, harps and accordions. A young girl and her father sit on bench, and the girl wears a captains hat with the words 'Dean and Davis' printed across it.
Title - White sailed yachts complete the picture at Lausanne.
Along the rivers banks, a large amount of people have gathered along the fences as the ferry passes (possibly passengers for the next boat). Still on board the steam ferry, the filmmaker captures yachts and rows boats navigating the waters, while in the background, modernist architecture stands dominate on the banks.
Title - The next day we speed alongside the rushing Rhone towards the Mountains of Italy.
A frenzied sequence ensues with shots of mountainous landscape taken from a speeding train.
Title - To arrive twelve hours later at Bolzano in the Dolomites where quaintness and modernity intermingle.
Now in Bolzano, Italy, the filmmaker captures a melange of interesting shots which show a fountain, clock tower, horse and cart, trams and policemen wearing admiral style head gear. Next, a street market is a hive of activity; sellers and stalls line the streets offering spices, vegetables and one particular stall sells live fish in a goldfish bowl.
Title - Pedestrians must use the 'crossing'.
A man in a bright white suit and curvy sun hat directs traffic and pedestrians from the side of a road. Several shots show cattle dragging carts piled high with hay through the streets.
Title - After leaving Bolzano, we cross the frontier & speed along through Austria's pine clad mountains.
With a Mountain range looming overhead, many passengers hang out the windows of a stationary train, while other passengers wait on the ground outside the train. A man in a smart suit talks animatedly to a border soldier, while a man in the background sucks on a pipe. Then, a refreshments cart takes orders from passengers hanging out the windows, which a man then writes down on a piece of paper. The train sets off, and the proceeding sequence shows vast mountainous landscapes and a town nestled below them.
Title - In lovely Vienna the spirit of the Immortals still seems to linger.
The filmmaker captures a shot of an extremely grand pillared building, followed by various marble statues and a shot of even more decadent building, which be described as a palace. Cutting away from these grandiose structures, tourists wearing shorts and carrying suitcases cross a busy street populated by trams, and on another street, a young girl stares at the camera. Next, an archaic, but majestic church has imposing steeple which stretch high into the air.
Title - The opera house.
Shot of the opera house from street level.
Title - The Chancellery is heavily guarded.
Soldiers carrying rifles fixed with bayonets march through the city streets in Vienna.
Title - Lesser known sights!
A flock of birds descend upon a man with a cap that reads 'Telegraf', and the man allows the birds to eat food from his mouth.
Title - In the gardens of Schobrunn palace.
Various shots show tourists exploring the gardens of Schobrunn palace, which consist of grand pond, fountains and elegant marble statues.
Title - Not far from Vienna lies the frontier where several hundred children are lined up to welcome us to Hungary.
Hundreds of children in traditional Hungarian dress wait patiently holding flowers while a brass band play. Above the platform, 'Hegyeshalom' (perhaps the station name) is written. A man of apparent importance addresses a crowd consisting predominately of women, who wear clearly expensive hats and dresses of a very uniform style. Following this, the children hand the flowers to the women, many of whom have cameras, and then the filmmaker capture various close ups of the children. The final shot, taken from a moving train, shows the children and other greeters waving off the tourists.
Title - After our long journey, it is refreshing to reach our hotel in Budapest. The famous St. Gellert Hydro.
In this sequence the filmmaker captures many guests at the hotel enjoying an outdoor swimming pool, which has a wave machine, and in one shots the waves can be seen hitting swimmers at considerable speed.
Title - The wonderful surf pool attracts visitors from all over the world.
This sequence shows more shots of the outdoor pool, including a slide and area surrounding it which is packed out by people lounging on sun beds.
Title - A grotto in the St.Gellert Hill also takes the healing waters from great underground springs.
A wooden cross stands above a cave, and next there are shots of an outdoor catholic ceremony, which includes priests conducting the ceremony and people praying.
Title - On the hills of Buda, a royal palace of unparallel splendour overlooks Danube.
An expansive view shows the hills of Buda and a royal palace overlooking a river, where boats are moored along the banks.
Title - In the courtyard, many tourists witness the changing of the guard.
In this sequence, soldiers in traditional uniforms unique to Hungary march across a square followed by a marching band. Then, soldiers in modern military apparel, march down a street lined by spectators and into the square, where the changing of the guard ceremony takes place.
Title - St. Stephen, first Christian king of Hungary, stands amidst the towers of the Fishers' Bastion.
A grand statue of a man on horseback, quite possibly St.Stephen, is the focus of several tourists attention, and a following shots takes a closer look at a detailed carving which is set into the stone. Then the filmmaker cuts to a fantastically eccentric, archaic building made of stone towers, and tourists climb its winding staircases.
Title - Across the river, parliament house surmounts the busy quays of the Pest.
From an elevated position, the filmmaker captures a sprawling view of Danube's skyline, which encompasses the river and parliament house. The focus then switches to the river, where various cargo boats carrying timber and crates sail past the camera.
Title - The steamers just clear the Danube bridges.
Various shots from on board a steam ship show the boat passing under several bridges, before sailing past parliament house.
Title - These moored barges show us a new way to fish.
By the river banks, fisherman catch fish by sticking large nets through a hole in the barge before dumping their catch into a crate.
Title - We lay a wreath on the tomb of the unknown warrior, who rests amid superb surroundings.
A service is being held to commemorate this 'unknown soldier', and many people have gathered round a grave watching as three men lay an impressive wreath. Following this, there are shots of a grand stone statues, gates and a opulent pillared building.
Title - The agricultural museum
Across a small stretch of water lies the agricultural museum, a distinct piece of architecture with many spires. Next, the filmmaker captures a young boy rowing a canoe.
