This film is from a collection of films made by Leeds based filmmaker Jack Goldberg. The collection consists of footage from family holidays, weddings, family food shop, and family activities. As the family are Jewish there are a lot of interesting insights into the family traditions, foods and religious customs. This film captures the engagement party for Lynne Goldberg and her fianc? and a trip to London by Edith Goldberg and some friends. The film opens with Lynne's fianc? preparing food in the kitchen; he is wearing a chef's uniform and hat. He chops potatoes and then jokingly wields the knife at the camera. In the dining room there are lots of `Congratulations on your Engagement' cards on the sideboard. Lynne is sitting on the floor beside the unit and looking at some of the cards. Edith is in the hall with a vase of roses; Lynne is beside her and gives her mother a kiss on the cheek. Back in the dining room Lynne is rubbing a cat and playing with it. Lynne's fianc? boils and peels tomatoes and the two women help; he arranges some vegetable into the design of a flower. There is a shot of the dining table laden with food. A man sits beside the table; he gets up and brings a plate over to the table, as if he is going to begin eating. In the kitchen `the chef' has a bread-stick sword fight with another woman. Lynne and her fianc? welcome all of their guests, most of which bring gifts with them. Just inside the door they have set up a drinks bar and people help themselves as they come in the door. More and more people arrive. There are shots of Lynne, her fianc?, friends, Edith and Malcolm tidying up. They wash glasses and put them into boxes, tidy the table and put things away. `The chef' catches Lynne around the waist and kisses her, she laughs. A London underground sign with `West Hampstead' is the next shot. There are many shots of Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, the mounted guards and various monuments and buildings. The next scene is in a park and a man is standing on a box giving a speech; a crowd have gathered around him. A small group of young people gather in a semi-circle and clap and chant. There are more shots of London's sights including: Big Ben, the House of Parliament, Number 10 Downing Street and Trafalgar Square. A female graduate wearing ceremonial gowns is posing outside in the wind. The gown has blown off her leg exposing her entire thigh and the camera lingers on this shot. Edith is sitting on a train talking to the camera; there is another couple opposite her who smile at the camera. The next shot is of two toy boats on a pond. There are shots of St. Hilda's Abbey on the hill in Whitby, taken from the opposite side of the harbour. There are more shots of the harbour and men in the boats, and the Abbey ruins. The `Gatwick Airport' sign on the main terminal is visible and then there is a shot of an aeroplane on the runway. The next shots are of the fields and clouds below taken from inside the place. The landscape of Israel is visible, with ruins, dry land and trees. Lynne sits on a wall beside a man; he goes over and poses behind large sculpture and then waves at the camera. There is a shot of a large Menorah (a Jewish candlestick commonly used to celebrate Hanukkah) monument. A man walks over to a stone tomb and places something on the top; there are Hebrew letters engraved on the side. Shots of a busy street taken from a balcony and looking down. Following this is a brief shot of a walled building surrounded by palm trees and then shots of market stalls where Lynne and another man sit down nearby for a rest. A cable car goes up the side of a hill and then shots of Lynne and others walking around the sights. There are ruins, views of the sea and some roads visible in the distance. Crowds of people wander around and drink water from a fountain. Then there are shots from the cable car as it goes back down the hill. Down on a beach, adults and children are paddling and swimming in the sea. The final shot is of a fruit stall and dry, empty roads.
