Geoffrey Wheeler is holding the book and telling us that the story is about a boy called David. He says that David's parents went on and on at him to be careful while crossing the road, but David never really listened because he day dreamed. This is followed by the narrator reading the book.
The story starts with David's parents talking to him about road safety. In the next shot David is playing football with his friend who kicks the ball onto the road; David goes after it and then cuts to a picture of him being knocked down. The driver carries David home to his mother.
David is in bed, is visited by the doctor and then discovers that his hair has become spikey because of the accident. The boys in school laugh at him so he goes the hair dresser to try to fix it; it fails. He uses hair cream but it doesn't work. He decides to run out onto the road again but he is stopped by a lollipop man who tells him to use his Green Cross Code.
In the next section, David is walking to school with his cap high up on top of his tall, spikey hair. He carefully goes across the pedestrian crossing and as he does so his hair begins to shrink. He helps some younger children to cross and it keeps getting smaller and smaller. The narrator talks to the camera again in the last section; he talks about the importance of learning and using the Green Cross Code.
