The film opens with people arriving at Buckfastleigh Railway Station in South Devon to take a journey to Totnes. The commentary explains how the line was once a branch of the Great Western Railway and claims that it was closed by Dr Beeching in 1958. It then relates its re-opening, by Beeching in 1969, under the Dart Valley Railway Ltd. A steam engine (1638) backs onto some carriages and a shunter puts the screw coupling on and the vacuum brake pipe. The driver has a chat with passengers and refreshments are taken aboard. The train slowly pulls out of the station and the guard clips tickets. The passing scenery is viewed through a carriage window. It passes Staverton Bridge where there is a railway crossing. At Totnes the engine runs around to connect to the other end of the train and makes the return trip to Buckfastleigh.
