Steps in Time is a collection of eight films made through the Renaissance Partnership Initiative to create a contemporary filmed history of the story of dance in Leeds. Made in collaboration with Leeds Museums, Mojo Media, and the Yorkshire Film Archive, this project follows the inspiring, heart-felt, true story of dance through the eyes of the people who dance to live and live to dance. This film tells the story of De-Napoli Clarke and his style of dance, Reggae/Jazz/Contemporary.
Opening titles to Steps in Time - De-Napoli Clarke 'Reggae, Jazz, Contemporary'
De-Napoli explains that he is one of those hyperactive boys and was always quite physical. He loved to do beat box or dance around which resulted in him being labelled the class clown many times. Now he is the artistic producer and director of RJC dance. RJC dance is reggae, jazz and contemporary dance and the companies been growing since 1993 now. De-Napoli trained at the Northern School of Contemporary dance, located in Leeds, from 1986 to 1989.
Within his dance company, he tries to keep the student's love for dance, trying to make them remember why they got into it in the first place. The love of dance is not something that can be taught, but something dancers must find.
De-Napoli is interested in different styles of music. He finds classical music has a lot of depth to it and is quite dark as well. He also enjoys rock music which is a form of reggae music or blues. Whether it is acid jazz, some pop tunes, rhythm and blues, or garage music, his personal style is a mixture of everything. His dancing and training reflects that as well.
While De-Napoli is being interviewed, there are several images of Leeds streets coinciding with images of De-Napoli dancing in the studio (BW image slowed down). There is also an exterior shot of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds streets, and De-Napoli dancing. De-Napoli leads a dance class through steps, and dancers stretching in the studio before performing the steps. De-Napoli dances by a window.
De-Napoli explains he is currently working on a solo show called Halos, but it is a work in progress. He had his neck broken when he was spinning in a club as a result of a man throwing a bottle at him. The doctors said he was lucky it was not worse, and he's grateful to still be here. The main message of the show is that life is too short, and one should enjoy life while they can. And it's the love of the dance that keeps him going.
De-Napoli is wearing white costume and walks through white curtains on stage. White curtains are arranged on the stage to create the set for his performance. De-Napoli performs his act on stage, and this footage is slowed down and contains interlocking images.
