Title: The Mike Neville Show
Sitting at a table presenter Mike Neville introduces tonight’s guest as a truly multi-talented performer with an outstanding career as both an actor and singer, but when he was at school was told the best think he could hope for was a job on a building site. A clip from the hit comedy drama Auf Wiedersehen, Pet featuring Jimmy Nail as builder Oz Osbourne.
Sitting across from Mike is Jimmy Nail who is asked about his father who was a professional footballer did he ever have any sporting ambitions? He explains that he didn’t have the determination to become a footballer. Looking at the camera he sticks his tongue out at the teachers who thought he would only ever work on a building site before talking about a schools careers meeting and being laughed at for wanting to go to university.
He talks about his early involvement in the local music scene and forming a rhythm and blues band in Newcastle after meeting the Sex Pistols in London and going on drinking adventures with them. He talks about the audition process for getting onto Auf Wiedersehen, Pet initially coming in for an extra but ending up with one of the leading roles. Another clip from the programme is followed by him talking about the challenges of becoming a household name virtually overnight and coping with instant fame.
He talks about returning to the recording studio in 1985 and the success of his version of Love Don’t Live Here Anymore reaching number three in the UK charts. He explains there was a reluctance in the music business to accept actors as anything other than novelty record makers which continued until the mid-1990s.
He talks about coming up with the idea for the BBC police drama series Spender which he co-wrote alongside Ian La Frenais. Taking the programme into a commercial break a clip from the drama.

Returning from the break Jimmy admits it was a mistake taking on too many roles on Spender being star, writer, director and executive producer. He talks about the challenges he faced, and the time needed to recover. He talks about the hit song Ain’t No Doubt which was released in 1992 and being in fellow actor Timothy Spall’s kitchen with his mum when he heard it had gone to number one in the UK chart. A clip from the music video follows.
He talks about the inspiration for both the song and television series Crocodile Shoes with the song given to him by composer Tony McAnaney in the early 80s and his wish to initially turn it into a feature film. As he talks about another big hit Big River and his collaboration with Mark Knopfler a clip from the music video featuring Mark on guitar.
Jimmy talks about entering the movie business and the feature film he did about an aging pop group Still Crazy. He talks about how television has changed and a passion project he is currently working on about the Jarrow Crusade which he hopes to be made with the BBC.
Mike brings up Jimmy’s new album Ten Great Songs and an Okay Voice. He talks about how he was able to select and do the arrangements. A clip follows of his rendition of The Police hit Walking on the Moon.
Jimmy is asked about a new series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet currently in development which he believes is going to happen. He talks about his concerns about going back to something that was so successful and what he hopes it will achieve.
Jimmy brings the interview to a close by telling Mike it was a pleasure to speak with someone who has represented the very best in broadcasting in the Northeast for forty-years. Over the closing credits another clip from his version of Walking on the Moon.
