The third episode in the fourth series of this chat show presented by regional television personality Mike Neville that this week feature Middlesbrough born magician and television personality Paul Daniels who talks with Mike about his upbringing on Teesside, his trials and tribulations on the road to stardom and his relationship with wife Debbie McGee.
Title: The Mike Neville Show
Sitting on a sofa of his guests Wargrave in Berkshire home, Mike introduces Paul Daniels as a man born at Southbank in Middlesbrough with a determination to become the most successful television personality of his age, a man with professionalism and consummate skill who made it inevitable that his chance will come, and when it did he grabbed it with both hands. A clip from The Paul Daniels Show produced by Granada Television in 1977 in which Paul performs a trick in which he escapes a guillotine.
The two men joke about their plush surroundings after which Paul talks about growing up in Southbank and telling a story of the family home in Pearl Street being destroyed by the German Luftwaffe during World War Two. Paul is asked about his Granny Lloyd who is described as a character helping to set up the Southbank Mission Hall to get kids off the street. He talks about how he got into magic through reading and getting a scholarship to the William Turner Grammar School at Coatham in Redcar. He explains why he didn’t enjoy or learn much while there but provides details on two teachers who he remembers with fondness.
Paul talks about leaving school and being offered many different jobs including as a journalist for the local newspaper the Evening Gazette but admits that all he wanted to be a magician. He talks about performing magic in local clubs, church halls and societies before being called up for National Service and finding work in an Hong Kong nightclub retuning to Britain with a three-part act which included his brother Trevor who could play the accordion.
Over a photograph of Paul surrounded by his family he talks about his work ethos both holding down a job in local government while also working part-time as a musician. He talks about working with his mother in a mobile shop earning enough to buy himself his own corner shop.
Taking the programme into a commercial break Paul is asked about his first big break which happened when he was thirty and being offered a summer season.

Returning from the commercial break Paul talks about being invited onto Opportunity Knocks and doing an audition for Hughie Green. Over a second clip from The Paul Daniels Show featuring a woman being pushed through a sheet of glass, Paul explains why magical acts need to be a minimum of 10 minutes which was hard for television executives at the time to understand.
He talks about the move of The Paul Daniels Show to the BBC and its astonishing fifteen years run. Paul talks about doing over six-hundred television shows and believes its success was because of certain policies he had in place to make sure each episode was as entertaining as possible as well as always changing the pace meaning audiences never knew what the show was going to do next. A clip from The Paul Daniels Magic Christmas Show shown on BBC Television in 1984 in which Paul uses magic to make a large safe containing a million pounds disappear and reappear somewhere else.
He is asked about getting together with Debbie McGee who is twenty years his junior. He explains that while they liked each other immediately he was fearful of the tabloid press whom he describes as ‘murderers of relationships.’ Over a clip of The Paul Daniels Magic Show from 1992 featuring Debbie he talks about eventually asking her to marry him and promising her that her life won’t be boring. Having been together now for 23-years, he talks about their reputation as being the happiest couple in showbusiness.
Bringing the interview to a close Paul is asked about his future plans. He talks about wanting to be in a movie as his dad owned and ran the Hippodrome Cinema in Southbank. He explains that he did a Moliere comedy in the West End which got him interested in acting.
Over the closing credits Paul performing a song and dance routine of the Shirley Bassey song The Joker on The Paul Daniels Magic Show for Granada Television.
