Title: The Mike Neville Show
Returning from the break Mike Neville describes his next guest as a man whose flamboyance, cheekiness and fondness for all things surreal has kept him in the public eye for more than thirty years. A clip of George Melly singing jazz changes to him coming out onto the stage and sitting next to Stephen McGann. Mike explains to George it is the first time he has spoken with a ‘national treasure.’ He explains to Mike why he likes the Northeast and Newcastle as it has its own identity similar to Liverpool. He talks about how singing brings him great satisfaction, but unlike Stephen who enjoys it finds writing to be a lonely occupation. He is asked about his flamboyant style and George talks about how it developed from an early age while his interest in jazz began at school. He provides details on working with the likes of Mick Mulligan and being part of John Chilton’s Feetwarmers for more than 30 years. George and Stephen talk about their love of Liverpool and about all the changes that are taking place. They are asked why so many artists and musicians come from Liverpool with George believing it is to do with the cities Irish population and their belief in words.
