The third episode in the second series of a chat show presented by regional television personality Mike Neville that this week features the quintessential straight man actor Nicholas Parsons and the unstoppable muti-instrumentalist Joe Brown.
Title: The Mike Neville Show
To the applause of the studio audience presenter Mike Neville comes out on to the stage and introduces his first guest as whom he describes as being a television and radio presenter who has attained cult status and with a knack of being unpredictable. A clip from the Tyne Tees Television music programme The Tube in which Nicolas Parsons appears from a three-tier cake in spotted boxershorts making presenters Jools Holland, Paula Yates and Alexi Sayle speechless. Coming out onto the stage Nicholas takes a seat beside Mike and the two talk about the importance of making an entrance. Nicholas is concerned that young actors haven’t learned the craft as they haven’t spent time in repertory theatre like he did. He talks about becoming chairman of the ever-successful quiz show Just a Minute which has been going for thirty-two years. He explains that he doesn’t mind people making jokes at his expense, it is part of being a straight man. He talks about some of the former panellists he misses such as Derek Nimmo and Kenneth Williams. He provides some details on his one-man show which he was on the programme to promote before talking about being involved with The Comic Strip and their film Mr Jolly Lives Next Door which has become a cult with its own fan clubs.
Taking the programme into a commercial break Mike states that after the break he will be chatting with multi-instrumentalist and all-round entertainer Joe Brown.
Title: The Mike Neville Show
Returning from the break Mike Neville describes his next guest as a man whose natural charm has ensured he has remained popular for forty-years in showbusiness starting his musical career playing guitar and now four decades on is a multi-instrumentalist. A clip featuring Joe Brown on stage sings a county and western tune while playing the fiddle. Coming out onto the stage he takes a seat beside Nicolas Parsons with both men talking about the importance of making a good entrance. Mike asks Joe about his gruelling touring schedule which he still loves doing. With Joe explaining why he now prefers playing in small theatres rather than clubs, he is then asked about his musical influences with Joe providing details on the likes of Arthur ‘Guitar Boogie’ Smith and Django Reinhardt. Nicholas jumping in to say that the reason why Joe has survived so long in showbusiness is that while is material is similar, he has adapted it to new audiences. Joe talks about the importance of enjoying himself before moving on to talk about his acting career which he sees as being very similar to his musical career and the importance of having a professional attitude. He talks about performing in the musical comedy Charlie Girl with Anna Neagle which he sees as a ‘posh panto’ being an adaptation of Cinderella. Nicholas jumps in as he also in Charlie Girl which he did on roller skates.
Brining the programme to an end Mike thanks his guests as well as the studio audience and provides details on next week’s programme when he will be joined by the remarkable George Melly and Emmerdale star Stephen McGann.
