A documentary produced Tom Harmer of Faith and Bones Productions that features artist Jamie Steward working in the portraits of four Afro-Caribbean elders from Bradford. As Jamie works on each of the paintings those whom he is capturing share their experiences of being part of the Windrush generation which helped to rebuild Great Britain following World War Two, confronting racism and finding resilience that reveals the layers of identity that define their generation. Title: A Faith and Bones Productions Portrait artist Jamie Steward comes down an alleyway and makes his way into his basement studio. Taking a seat at an easel, he uses an image on his tablet computer as reference for the drawing he is creating on paper of Viola McKenzie. As he continues his work, which including mixing and applying watercolours with a large brush, he talks about his artistic process and about the four West Indian individuals he is working on. Title: Painted As Jamie Steward works to build up various layers for each of the four portraits of Viola McKenzie, Headley Franklin McCaulsky, June Foster and Viola’s daughter Juleth McKenzie each of them talks about the reasons they left the West Indies for Britain in the 1960s, their experience of working and living in Bradford and their experiences of racism and how they overcame it for the betterment of themselves, their families and their local communities. As he continues to work in both water and oil paints Jamie also talks about his experiences of both seeing racism growing up and how he looks on trying to tackle such prejudice today. With each of the portraits now complete Jamie places them individually onto an easel to examine them more closely. In voiceover he talks about how the stories of these four individuals echo millions of others and how working on them highlighted his own ignorance in some of their histories that he believes need to be told and how the portraits capture a small part of each of their journeys in life.
