A short film by documentarian Tom Harmer about a former fireman, wrestler and now rocking horse maker from Bradford Colin Bennett. While working in his joinery workshop he shares stories about his long and fascinating life and what he has learned from his experiences. Over the opening title Colin Bennett makes his way into his joinery workshop. Title: Colin Bennett Rocking Horse Maker / Fireman / TV Star As he begins to continue work carving a rocking horse using a hammer and chisel, he talks in voiceover about being on television and being watched by 11 million people. As he continues to work, he talks about being born in Bradford during World War Two, what the city was like before and after the war and about beginning his joinery life working for a local joiner and undertaker. Sitting on a sofa inside his house Colin flicks through a photographic album talking about his thirty-year career as a fireman and becoming an amateur wrestler and television personality. Walking along the banks of a stream outside his home Colin comes to sit on a chair talking about retiring from everything to return to an environment of working with wood again. As he relaxes in the chair, he contemplates the idea that life is too short to go quickly. Back in his workshop as he continues to work on the rocking horse he talks about what he has learned from using his hands and about the importance of putting the effort into getting on in life. As he sits inside with his wife, he exclaims this including making the effort with marriage. Back in the workshop Colin sits looking contemplative stating that there is no reason why a person can’t do anything if they really, really want to. As he returns to working on the rocking horse, he explains that although he is 81 years old, he still has a lot to do with his life. As the camera pans away from him it passes two large circular signs for his company ‘Ronnie the Rocking Horse Maker’ and a rocking horse on display in a window. In voiceover he concludes that if you are honest, tell the truth and put effort in you will get the rewards and that life will work out hokey-kokey. End title: Bradford for Everyone.
