The twenty-seventh of thirty-seven short films produced by documentary filmmaker Tom Harmer as part of the 52Humans project. Filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic and released weekly for a year, a film about Noel, an Indian born surgeon who overcame invisible boundaries to become a successful the surgeon he is today. Title: Invisible Boundaries 27/52 A montage of photographs of Noel’s grandfather who is described as someone who went out into the world to explore. Following Noel walking past across a moorland landscape, another photographic montage of related images and him talking about not getting into medical school and travelling to Russia to become a doctor and the many failures during this period of his life. As she stands looking reflective, he stares directing into the lens and talks about how in life you are surrounded by the unknown which makes you feel week and hopeless but that you need to start trusting and believing in yourself. Joel climbs over a rocky escarpment and talks in voiceover about his wish to become a surgeon but putting up invisible boundaries of anxiety and fear. As he walks along a hillside at dusk and with a town lit up below, he talks about facing his fears and realising they weren’t as bad as he thought. Over more contemporary images of him now a surgeon and attending conferences he talks about how he never settles as when he does, he starts losing his drive. As he talks about what he believes his role in life is about he stands looking down on the town below. Title: “Don’t settle, face your fears and become who you were created to be.” Noel.
