The first of seven fascinating and thought-provoking films produced by viewers of the Tyne Tees Television news programme North East Tonight which present a range of thoughts, hopes, dreams and fears about moving into a new millennium. In this film written by Mark Robinson from Teesside he expresses our continual hunger for new things, new fads and new experiences which recognises that nothing starts without something else ending and that you cannot look forward without looking back. A countdown from ten at the end of which the demolition of a shipyard crane with explosives. Beside the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge Mark Robinson comes and takes a seat on a bench and asks, ‘how to say goodbye to the 20th century’. In the background the gondola on the bridge crossing the River Tees. An artistic montage follows featuring a policeman, a young woman and an older woman all of whom are intercut along with Mark with each making a statement for the audience ‘to remember’ a perspective or idea relating to contemporary life both in relation to the past, present and future. While the other three characters are filmed in front of a green-screen, Mark is seen around Middlesbrough including on and around the Transporter Bridge, beside the Riverside Stadium, the home of Middlesbrough Football Club and in the Hemispherium, a 6-metre dome that provides an immersive virtual reality experience at the Virtual Reality Centre, part of what was then the University of Teesside now Teesside University. Mark standing beside the fishing huts at the South Gare near to the Tees Estuary where he addresses the audience to ‘remember the new millennium, the new century, the new now.’ A final montage featuring the clips used in this film and the shipyard crane demolition being reversed and it coming to stand erect again.
