Over footage of an unemployment marching through Leeds, a narrator explains that while the Yorkshire Television region has around 40,000 unemployed aged in their late teens or early twenties, some have been able to keep themselves out of this statistic through their own enterprise.
In the Yorkshire Television studio in Leeds presenter Richard Whitley provides details on a £400 prize which will go to the individual who proved they are the most enterprising. He provides details on the work done by the producers over the past few months to seek out youngsters from around the region who have made jobs for themselves. Photographs of four young people, examples of some of the fascinating ideas and remarkable successes the producers have come across.
Richard introduces the Enterprize judging panel who will made the decision on the winner beginning with Mrs Judith Donovan ‘Female Executive of the Year’ and President of Bradford Junior Chamber of Commerce, Bernard Dineen Business Editor of the Yorkshire Post and George Moore who is a Wetherby businessman.
In a large temporary dining room set up at the National Coal Board (NCB) Selby coalfield development site in North Yorkshire, the first finalist 21-year-old Kim Fretwell from Goole in East Yorkshire works alongside her staff to feeding the men on site as part of her catering business. Returning to the studio Kim is asked questions about its operation and future by the judging panel.
Inside a turkey shed on a Lincolnshire broiler farm 18-year-old Mark Jones from Horncastle works his Bobcat utility vehicle to clear the poultry house of animal waste. In voiceover details are provides on Mark’s business which as well as clearing also washes and disinfects poultry sheds. Back in the studio the judges ask question about his business after which the audience applaud.
In the yard of a Leeds factory brother Gordon and Ian McFarland from Horsforth work to load one of their flatbed lorries with a consignment of timber. As the work continues, and their MacFarlane Transport Ltd lorry departs details are given on this road haulage business run by the brothers. Back in the studio 24-year-old Gordon and 22-year-old Ian take questions about their company from the judging panel.
As 19-years-old Christopher Rees from Leeds arrives at the home of a prospective client, the narrator provides details on his business selling and installing showers. He knocks on the door and speaks with the homeowners offering them reasonable price to install a shower. Back in the studio he takes comments and questions from the judges about his business and his position in it as a salesman.
As the judges consider the winner Richard speaks with Derek Norton the Chairman of Hadfield’s of Sheffield about his career in business. The Chairman of the judging panel Bernard Dineen then proceeds to give the results beginning with the runners-up prize going to Gordon and Ian McFarland and making Mark Jones the winner. Richard and Derek come over with Richard presenting the prizes to the winners. Over the closing credits bottles of Champagne are opened and enjoyed by all the contestants.
