Title: One Woman
In the Yorkshire Television studio presenter Marylyn Webb introduces her guest Lincolnshire born actress Patricia Hodge. Following a clip from the Thame Television programme ‘Jemima Shore Investigates’ in which she stars, Patricia talks about the differences between working in television and film compared to the theatre which she loves. She talks about become well known to the public through her television roles and the need to take parts in ‘popular entertainment’ such as ‘Holding the Fort’ and ‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ but needing the balance with theatrical work. She talks about how she got the role in the film ‘Betrayal’ which was originally offered to Meryl Streep. She talks about being described as the ‘perfect English Rose.’
Moving the discussion on Marylyn and Patricia talk about her upbringing in what is now Humberside, although Patricia sees it still as Lincolnshire, and being raised in both Cleethorpes and Grimsby. She talks about the family owning and running The Royal Hotel near the dock gates. As she is shown photographs of herself as a child, Patricia talks about her early ambitions to become an actress as well as her time in education both in the region and at private school before going to teacher training college.
In the final part of the programme as Patricia is shown some photographs of her in some of her earliest stage roles, she talks about how she became established within the profession. She talks about still getting stage nerves, the challenges of becoming an actor today and of playing real-life people such as Lady Diana Cooper and Nancy Mitford.
