Title: One Woman
In the Yorkshire Television studio presenter Marylyn Webb introduces her guest Clare Venables the current Artistic Director of the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. In the first part of the discussion Marylyn and Clare talk about why there are so few women working as theatrical directors and what are the challenges for them should they decide to become one. Clare talks about her own experiences and the challenges she faced and why it is harder for women to have power and equality as well as achieve success. She is critical of the ‘superwoman’ myth and provides details of why she believes there are fewer opportunities today for women since the growth of the feminist movement and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and about the expectations that are now put on them by society.
As Marylyn shows Clare a series of photographs she talks about her upbringing and childhood describing both her parents as ‘feminists of their generation’ and being part of an intellectual family, her father Sir Peter Venables was one of the founders of the Open University, and being raised a Fabian socialist committed to serving the community. She talks about her time at Manchester University where she found her love of theatre and working and leaning from the great stage director Stephen Joseph. In the final part of the programme, she talks about the challenges of being Artistic Director of the Lincoln Theatre Royal before taking the role at the Crucible Theatre and how she was able to make both theatres a success. She explains how much she likes the Crucible building, one of the few modern buildings she feels at home in.
