Title: One Woman
In the Yorkshire Television studio presenter Marylyn Webb introduces her guest Edna Healey who as well as being the wife of the Labour Party’s outspoken deputy leader and MP for Leeds East Dennis Healey is also a highly respected writer and biographer and now broadcaster and filmmaker. The interview begins with Marylyn asking Edna about the biograph ‘Lady Unknown’ which she wrote about the life story of a remarkable woman Angela Burdett-Coutts a 19th century philanthropist and the first woman to be made Baroness in her own right.
As Edna is shown a series of old photographs of herself, she talks about her upbring, her mother as well as her time at Oxford University. She talks about meeting her husband Dennis and being part of his political career. She moves onto talking about her filmmaking and ‘Mrs Livingstone, I Presume’ which she directed in 1982 about the wife of explorer David Livingstone. She provides details on a project she is currently working on about the Scottish Presbyterian missionary Mary Slessor. A discussion is had on female explorers and her and Dennis’s travels to Africa.
Returning to British politics, she talks about her time living at 11 Downing Street and the challenges of being the wife of the Chancellor of the Exchequer the experience of which became the book ‘Part of the Pattern: Memoirs of a Wife at Westminster.’ She talks more about her experience as a filmmaker in Africa and what she learned about the lives of 19th century missionary wives while there.
