Marylyn Webb introduces this week’s episode on the rising tide of violent attacks in Britain and explains that Mrs Pool was the 72nd person over 60 to be injured following a violent attack in South Yorkshire in 1980. Statistics are given for the number of murders, rapes as well as wounding's in England and Wales in 1979 before talking about the acute emotional suffering of the victims of such horrific attacks. For every £1 spent on the attacker, explains Marylyn, only 1p is spent on the victim.
Co-presenter Richard Madeley provides details on a rapist who in the past 18-months has attached twelve women across West Yorkshire. Filmed back in August a policeman dressed in a similar outfit to the attacker that features a motorcyclist balaclava. Nearby Richard speaks with Mrs Irene Cahill less than 24-hour after being attacked by the rapist about this horrific experience and how she was able to fight him off. Back in the studio Richard speaks again with Mrs Cahill about the horror of that night and the emotional and mental scars that attack has left on her three months on.
Explaining that two-fifths of all sexual assaults never come to court as they are not reported to the police, Marylyn speaks with Jane Fitzsimmons from Leeds Rape Crisis Centre, one of a new type of centre set up across the country that focuses on the special needs of victims of sexual assaults. Jane is asked what effect this fundamental violation of a woman have on them and what type of support do women need and what is offered by these new centres. At the present time the centre in Leeds is the only one in Yorkshire.
Richard provides details on the assault and robbery of 55-year-old Mrs Kathleen Cook by two men in her Rotherham home back in January. Sitting on her sofa she speaks with Marylyn about the attack, her injuries and why nearly a year later she hasn’t fully recovered either physically or emotionally.
After explaining that 90% of compensation awarded by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Boards are for less than £1000 Richard speaks with Michael Whitaker who is the Secretary of Victims of Violence about the emotional and physical scars left by violence that will affect victims for rest of their lives. He talks about the work done by his organisation to raise awareness withing government of the seriousness of this issue and to raise levels of compensation as well as provide all that is humanly possible to victims of any age. He talks briefly about his own experience losing his daughter to murder ten years previous.
Marylyn providing details on Compassionate Friends, an organisation that offer support and comfort to any parent who suffered the death of a child through whatever cause. Sitting next to Marylyn is Mrs Pat Allen who is a specialist in offering support to parents who lost a child through violence. She is asked what are the emotions that beset a bereaved parent and how can she help them get over these feelings if possible.
After Marylyn explains that victims of burglaries are also classed as victims of violence she explains in the past two years there have been the formation of a growing number of victim support schemes across the country. Walking along a road is Clive Porter from the Sheffield Victim Support Scheme who makes his way to the home of Mrs Jesse Baddley who has recently been burgled. Inside she speaks with Marylyn about this experience and how it as emotionally affected her. She talks positively about the support she has received both practically and emotionally from the scheme. Back in the studio Marylyn speaks with Clive Porter about the work of the scheme and how people are referred to them for help.
Acknowledging that victims of violent crimes do need the support of the community, Richard explains that as this is only a recently recognised area of concern there are a limited number of helping groups available, almost all run by dedicated volunteers. Contact details for some of these groups are provided.
Marylyn brings the programme to a close by providing details on next week’s edition which will focus on your rights with regards the police if you are a victim of wrongful arrest or mistaken identity.
