Single parent Trisha Moreton from Bradford talks about feelings of depression and how the pills she receives from the doctor don’t help. Over the Rolling Stone’s singing about ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ a selection tablets and a montage of babies and small children playing.

Sitting at a news desk presenter Marylyn Webb introduces this edition by acknowledging that for many thousands of hard-pressed and depressed women reaching ‘for the shelter of her little helper’ in the form of pills such as Valium and Librium or alcohol is a daily occurrence. However, she states that in this programme she and co-presenter Richard Madeley will be provide details on the real help that is available, the people not the pills.
Richard provides details on contact centres that have been set up by the National Children’s Centre where mothers can meet and get help. At the Deighton Road Contact Centre in Huddersfield leader Pat Kemp sings songs with the children while Marylyn speaks with four mothers about the challenges of raising small children.
Back in the studio Marylyn provides details of a national telephone service for anyone with family worries to call that was set up the previous year during International Year of the Child by National Children’s Home. Over a montage of photographs of some of the thirty-five trained volunteers running the service, details are provided with regards one such phone service set up in Leeds called Family Network. Sitting next to Marylyn is the Regional Organiser of Family Network Margaret Parrish who is asked about the types of calls the network receives and what kind of practical help they can give.
Following Richard explaining that single parents account for 1 in seven families in the country, Marylyn visits Trisha Moreton in her Bradford home. As Trisha does the ironing Marylyn provides a background to her situation of being a single parent and about her feelings of isolation having to move to a new area. She talks about the challenges of setting up a new home for three of her four children, problems with getting works and the fears she has from men in the area attempting to take advantage of her situation. Returning to Richard in the studio he speaks with Judy Thomas from Gingerbread, the one parent family organisation, and asks her in general terms what their aims are and how they can help people like Trisha.
Back to Marylyn who after providing some details with regards women who become depressed following the birth of a baby, she speaks with Chirs Kelly who explains some of the challenges she faced following the birth of her son Tommy. She goes onto explain how it is quite common for mothers like her to feel this way that make them feel guilty. She goes onto provide details to Marylyn about an organisation she set up, Meet-a-mum, and how it helps women like her.
Richard asks the question what could turn a loving mum into a potential baby batterer? Sitting in her kitchen Marylyn speaks with Jose Harrison with regards her daughter Rachel who for more than 9-months wouldn’t stop crying or screaming. Jose explains how this constant strain affected her that she became so worked up that she could have hurt her own child. She then talks about the importance of finding people who can help.
Back in the studio Richard provides details on the National Children’s Centres play bus scheme. As he explains that these buses travel to isolated housing estates across West Yorkshire one of said vehicles parked in a road. Sitting beside Richard is Hazel Wigmore Director of National Children’s Centre who is asked how women like Jose reach such a point that they feel they need to harm their child and what can organisations like hers do to help.
Returning to Marylyn she asks what help is available to those parents who can’t stop themselves hurting their child. Over a montage of still images of a unit in Leeds, she provides details on the work done at NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) Special Units. Sitting beside Marylyn is Bernard Marran Regional Manager for the NSPCC who provide details on the therapeutic treatments provided by the unit to help re-educate parents to prevent further injuries occurring. He also provides details on how cases are referred to them and encourage people to get in contact if they have an issue.
Bringing the edition to a close Richard provide contact information for the organisation featured in the programme as well as others who viewers can call if they feel their child is at risk. The programme ends with Marylyn providing details on next week’s programme that will look at the problems of teenagers in trouble.
