An amateur film recording residents from the village of Skinningrove working to prepare for and hold their annual Bonfire Night celebrations in 1999. The theme of this year’s event was Pirates, and the film features the construction of large galleon on the local beach. With the ship completed crowds gather for a fireworks display after which the ship is burned. The film ends on the following morning and the debris from the fire being cleared away.
On the beach beside the Skinningrove Beck a group of men work to build the foundations for a bonfire structure. In a large room and a woman instructs a group of children in how to play a series of homemade percussion instruments. Back on the beach a pirate ship begins to take shape with men hammering planks of wood into position.
Sometime later the ship nears completion and has been painted white. Two sets of scaffolding have been erected on the main body of the ship as the two masts are installed. Beside the structure large piles of planks and wooden pallets. A stack of pallets erected in front of the ship has been painted white with the words ‘Dirty Dogs’ written on it. The weather turns wet as work on the pirate ship continues changes to the now completed ship which features a skull and cross-bone flag flying from one of the masts. Several pirate faces have been created and installed beside the ship and the name of the ship ‘The Grover’ has been added to the stern of the vessel.
At night a crowd gather along Marine Terrace with the road illuminated by lanterns. As the percussion group begins creating a beat a fire is lit on a small structure near to the pirate ship creating an image of a waving figure.
