Title: The Making of Eyes of Fire
To the song ‘Warriors of the Rainbow’ a montage of the young people who participated and featured in Eyes on Fire walking around various areas the East Cleveland coastline or working on the production in various capacities both in front of and behind the camera. The sequence ends with everyone sitting of the floor in a production space laughing.
Inside Loftus Town Hall at the start of the project the young people are given training and details on the project by professional artists and community workers. With some of the participants speaking in voiceover about their experiences, they split into groups and begins to work out ideas on how to portray different parts of the song. As the project progresses groups in different rooms work on various aspects of the production including performance, props and senary and animation. A teenage girl works with an editing computer, part of the training they receive in the use of film equipment.
A short performance with some of the participants playing as trees and as a wolf filmed in a dark and shadowy room changes to a young boy working with a lightbox to produce a cell for a pen and ink animation. He talks in voiceover about the work he is doing.
Over a second montage of participants in the project either walking around the Loftus and Skinningrove areas of East Cleveland or taking part in various workshops two girls and two boys being interviewed about the project and what they have learned from being a part of it.
Some of the group ride in a minibus to Skinngrove where they eat bags of chips while walking along the nearby beach. Back inside Loftus Town Hall as the production continues more of them are interviewed about which aspect of the production they most enjoyed being part of. Two girls explain why doing make-up was their favourite part while three boys talk about enjoying doing the animation and using the video equipment as well as working with the professional artists.
In various rooms several sequences for their filmed being produced with direction being given to the performers and props and background being working on between shots. One of the sequences being filmed is shown in full featuring a masked female figure being deposed from a throne by a young man in gold face paint.
On a computer screen the prophesy for ‘Warriors of the Rainbow’, the Village Arts logo and webpages relating to Chief Tom Thunderhorse whose narration featuring during this sequence. With animations playing in the background some of the participants talk about this ancient prophecy by an American Cree woman on environmental disaster that this project is based upon with some of the participants believing some of her predictions have come true.
Following another montage with participants pointing at the camera asking the viewer ‘what will you do!?’ several are asked what they think the world will be like when they are adults? Many express concerns for the future especially with regard the environment and problems with pollution.
Following another montage of the young people working on the production two of the girls talk about their enjoyment learning to act and dance. Another montage this time of them and other participants practicing several dance routines both inside Loftus Town Hall as well as on location around East Cleveland. As more of the teenagers talk about their experiences and what they have learned another montage of them working on several different animated sequences.
