A musical drama about an aspiring punk band believed produced by members of a Stockton-on-Tees youth club. The film follows the group as they give their first performance to a crowd of rowdy teenagers that does not go down well. Following the concert a brawl breakout between the group some of whom are critical of one member’s performance. However, having reconciled they are given a second chance, and they perform again under a different name with a more positive outcome.
The film opens with a montage of still images featuring members of the band performing on stage with a voiceover by Deb’s, one of the lead singers, talking about first night nerves. In the bands dressing room, the group get ready with the girls brush their hair and put on make-up while the boys talk about their nerves. Their manager Shirley appears and asking if they are ready, they confession that one of their bandmembers, Rocky, is missing. The group argue about where he is and what they should do if he doesn’t arrive. Finally, Rocky appears and the group shout at him for almost missing the performance.
In an auditorium rowdy teenagers wait on the group who appear on stage. With the two girls as lead singers they perform a song they have written themselves entitled ‘The Night’. At the end of the song the crowd isn't impressed and begin chanting ‘off, off, off!’. The group perform a second track before leaving the stage. Back in their dressing room they slump down in chairs complaining about each other’s performance.
Three members of the band stand outside chatting, Rocky appears and as he walks past one of them he is knocked into. The two boys begin to fight with Deb’s racing over to try and break it up. However, she becomes a part of a larger brawl that breaks out with the whole group plus a few others.
Sometime later the group come together to discuss what happened to them when the police broke up the fight. They argue until their manager Shirley appears telling them she is willing to give them a second chance, but they would need to change their name before their next gig.
On stage at a music venue a young man introduces the group describing them as having ‘a new name and a new sound’ Jane-o-Side (Genocide?). They begin to perform another song written by them entitled ‘Coffee Bar’ which, after some hesitation, the audience gets into beginning to move and dance to the music. They perform a second song entitled ‘What You Want to do About It’ and the crowd begin to go wild dancing along to the music. The song and film come to an end with the audience screaming ‘encore!’
