Title: Austin Mitchell
Title: Ann Syrett
Anne introduces the stories behind the young volunteers. She outlines the work of Community Service Volunteers who recruit young people between the ages of 16 to 25.
Title: Community Service Volunteers
Ann introduces this section of the programme which follows three community service volunteers who are working in a psychiatric hospital in Wakefield.
The film shows an art room where patients are at work sitting around a large table. Sally Whittlestone checks on their progress. Sally is a community service volunteer working in the art therapy department at Stanley Royd hospital in Wakefield. Her academic study is in art therapy and she is taking some time out to work and gain experience in an art therapy department. In the grounds of the hospital Sally speaks about her work on camera.
Title: Sally Whittlestone – Community Service Volunteer.
Sally talks about her experience working at the hospital. The film shows her working with a female patient then moves on to a male patient who requires some help. She gives another patient assistance with the shade of colour he’s using for his picture.
In another part of the hospital the programme shows two other community service volunteers Carol Keenan and Rhona Gray who are running a make-up class for some of the women patients. One of the girls applies nail varnish to the hands of one of the patients then applies a cream to her eyelids.
Back in the art therapy room Sally talks to one of the male patients, who is copying a portrait painting from a book. She adds some colour to the painting to help her student along.
In the grounds of the hospital another of the art therapists talks on camera.
Title: Briony Duckitt – Art Therapist
Briony talks about Sally’s contribution to the art therapy programme.
The programme goes back to Ann Syrett in the studio.
Ann introduces another community service volunteer. Gina Skelton works in Bradford at the Manningham Community Project, which is run by the YWCA, local churches and voluntary organisations. The work involves giving help and advice to immigrant families.
The film shows two women sharing an umbrella as they and other adults with small children walk down a rain soaked street.
Gina walks along a pavement towards the camera as she provides commentary about herself. She says she became a community service volunteer (CSV) as she wanted to work with Asian people and as she’s a trained teacher she thought she could combine those roles to do her current work. She teaches English and the film shows her entering a building. Above the door a notice reads ‘Manningham Project – Y.W.C.A. Neighbourhood Centre’. She goes on to say that she visits mostly women and girls at home.
Title: Gina Skelton – Community Service Volunteer.
Gina continues the outline of her work on camera which has included learning Urdu.
On her way down a street, she stops to talk to a local man outside a corner shop.
The film shows her in conversation with Dean Chaudhary.
Title: Dean Chaudhary – Education Welfare Officer
The programme cuts back to Gina finishing her conversation outside a shop and continuing to walk down the road. On camera Gina says that without speaking Urdu she would find it very difficult to do the job.
The programme goes back to Ann Syrett in the studio, who outlines the range of organisations that involve young people in community work including those at university.
A car parks outside a house and a young woman Antonia Forte gets out. Ann Syrett in commentary says she is the coordinator for York University’s social services organisation. She has come to Pat Thompsons house to do some baby-sitting while Pat goes to town.
Title: Antonia Forte – Y.U.S.S.O
Antonia describes the York University Social Services Organisation which she describes as a voluntary body using students as volunteers for community work in York.
The film goes back to Pat Thompson’s house as she prepares to leave her house and four year old triplets into the care of Antonia. Antonia shows the boys some books then they go and play outside.
On camera Antonia describes the wide range of community services the student volunteers attend.
One of the services the students are involved in is gardening for those who find the task difficult or impossible. The film shows Keith Abbott a Y.U.S.S.O. volunteer hard at work in an overgrown garden. The house owner is concerned about the garden getting out of hand and is appreciative of the work to make it tidy.
Title: Keith Abbott – Volunteer
He’s fine with the work he does but he needs to bring in extra help.
Title: Miss Coyle
Miss Coyle the owner talks about her garden when she used to be able to cultivate it properly.
Keith thinks it’s a good way to expend some energy instead of being involved in academic work all the time.
The programme goes back to Austin Mitchell in the studio. Austin introduces three guests who responsibility for voluntary work for young people.
The first guest is Janet Ciaretta
Title: Janet Ciaretta – Development Officer Comm. Service Volunteers
She replies to a question from Austin Mitchell about how typical the voluntary work was involving young people shown in the film. Janet replies that they were not particularly typical as the range of work available is much wider. She also emphasised that everyone has something to offer in voluntary work and its most definitely not solely dependent on special skills or qualifications.
Title: Bill Walton – Yorkshire Field Officer Int. Voluntary Service
Bill explains that despite being and organisation for international voluntary work they do have some ongoing programmes in Yorkshire.
The final guest has responsibilities for voluntary work in hospitals.
Title: Yvonne Storrs – Hospital Vol. Service Co-Ordinator – Wakefield
Yvonne describes the range of volunteer posts available in hospitals for young people in the Wakefield area, although she points out there are not enough volunteers because of Wakefield’s relatively small population, so anyone from the more general region would be welcome.
The discussion continues and despite the young age of the volunteers, retention is good, and there is support for volunteers in the hospital environment if needed. The other services represented also have mechanisms to accommodate volunteers if they have difficulties with some of the work.
Austin Mitchell closes the programme with information for viewers who may have an interest to join a volunteer scheme which is an address.
