This is the first film of events at Castle Howard Reformatory after the Second World War. It shows a school football match and sports day, with prizes presented by the 6th Earl of Harewood.
The film begins with two football teams posing for the camera. Action from the game is filmed, the game being played on rather long grass, including several goals and some great sliding tackles. The second half is filmed from behind one of the goals as well as from the half-way line. The game is played at a frantic pace.
On the grounds of a large building, possibly part of the school, some young adults walk horse and cart. A sports day is taking place, with a sack race, a three-legged race, a race on stilts, a race on pots, a race dribbling footballs, an egg and spoon race, a race involving peeling potatoes, and a cross country race. These are followed by a game with the boys in swimming trunks, with one boy giving another boy, who is carrying a jousting lance, a ‘horse ride’. They try to tip over a bucket of water raised above head height with the lance without getting wet. There is then a competition to chop a tree truck. This is followed by a scarecrow making competition. One boy tries to climb a slippery pole. This is followed by a race that requires the contestants to don women’s and adult clothing.
(Col.) Boys come up to receive prizes from the 6th Earl of Harewood, Henry Lascelles, after which everyone walks off, some walking around the grounds of the house. One man is shown close up. People are milling around the house, some next to cars, with some children with a pony. The film comes to an end with another close up of a man.
