The film begins showing the 2066 diesel shunter engine, about to take the last official goods train to run between Malton and Pickering. The narrator announces that the driver is Len Blades, of Malton. It is July 1st 1966. As the train makes its way it passes Rillington Junction, where the driver collects the key token for the single track to Grosmont. It approaches the closed station of Low Marishes, where there is a closed level crossing. As a red postal van crosses the gatekeeper pushes open the crossing. It passes Marishes Road with its hand operated boom gates and semaphore signals. Another level crossing is opened at Black Bull and the Black Bull signal box. Then on to Mill Lane Junction, with another level crossing and signal box. Altogether it passes five crossings, with New Bridge Quarry at the end. Here it collects just one wagon of limestone, which is free-wheeled, pushed by the guard, onto the shunting engine.
At the mill the empty wagons are marshalled onto the engine for the return run to Malton. As it passes a desolate station the level crossing opens. At Bridge Street the crew of engine driver and guards line up in front of the loco for the camera. On past Hungate for the final call to pick up some coal wagons. The guard, Tom Redman from Kirby Moorside, couples up and releases the hand brake using a shunting pole. It's his last day with British Rail. The train makes its way back passing the abandoned Marishes Road Station

The railway tracks are ready for scrap as the last train and its crew to pass from Pickering to Rillington Junction makes its forlorn journey.
Just two days after Jimmy Greaves scores four goals for England as they prepare for the World Cup, and the Beatles were number one in the charts, a lonely shunting engine makes its last way along the branch line to Pickering. We follow the journey along the line and past stations that were soon to close, filmed from on top of the loco by railway engineer Frank Dean. It heads to pick up just the one wagon of limestone, free shunted by guard Tom Redman on his last day with British Rail. This is one of many films made by railway engineer, enthusiast and filmmaker Frank Dean, mostly documenting the loss of lines following the Beeching Report in 1963. On hearing of the lines to be closed Frank and his wife set about filming all those in the Yorkshire area before their demise. Frank went on to compile an impressive collection of railway films and films of his local community in Church Fenton, which he would show at public viewings well into his 80s. Part of the Whitby line was preserved thanks to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which opened in 1973, but this did not include the line seen in the film that continued south of Pickering to join the Malton to Scarborough Line at Rillington Junction. |
