A world fit to live in- can the politicians be trusted?
Co-host Geoff Druett begins this segment of the episode by outlining the earths summit, a two-week long event consisting of 120 presidents and prime ministers as a chance to save the world from ecological disaster. Druett notes the large amount of critics who believe this event will achieve little to nothing. Recordings of Rio are shown as their agenda is stated, such as: drought, starvation on an ever-increasing scale, explosive population increase, emissions of climate changing greenhouse gases and consequent global warming, and the problem of third world debt (billions owed by the poorer to much richer nations).
Co-host Richard Whiteley takes over this discussion by saying that although most countries are prepared to stabilize their emissions and greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2000 the world's largest polluter is not, Americas president George W. Bush only signs up to vague and uneventful pledges regarding environmental change. The first report of this episode is focused on investigating dangers to the environment in south Yorkshire, a video interview with Trevor Mayne (Yorkshire spokesman for Friends Of The Earth) shows him speaking on the harmful effects of cars and nitrous oxide, acid rain, power stations. Throughout his interview Mayne advocates for increasing public transport usage and the acceptance by the general population for slightly lower standards of lives. The next report in this segment is introduced by Richard Whiteley, a report from Peter McNerney covering the river Don in South Yorkshire. The river Don was previously polluted and lacked marine and plant life, a trust was then set up to oversee the recovery of this landmark. Peter McNerney interviews one of the members of this trust, Simon Ogden, who speaks on the recovery of the landscape from its heavy industry background.
The final section of this theme is a panel in the Leeds studio ran by Geoff Druett and involving Ann Taylor (MP for Dewsbury and Labour's Shadow Minister for environmental protection), Dr Keith Hampson (Conservative MP for Leeds North East, former PPS in the department of the environment), and Tony Juniper (a member of Friends Of The Earth). The panel discusses the importance of the Rio summit as well as the third world debt in which they all agree on the need for the demolition of it.
Staying in power- Jefferey Archer says the Tories fit the bill
Richard Whiteley introduces Jefferey Archer, John Majors right-hand man, to the studio. They discuss the most recent general election which the Labour party was shocked to loose and the Conservatives even more shocked to win, Archer notes that the Prime Minister never once doubted his win and his confidence never faltered.
Fit for office- the flab fights back
Geoff Druett covers the final segment of the episode, a focus into the physical health of parliamentary members. Druett notes that politics isn't a healthy business and many MPs don't take proper care of themselves. Andrew Roth (long serving parliamentary commentator) is introduced onto the show to share his opinions on the matter, Roth states that they work harder than members of parliament did 20 years ago and the lack the time and opportunity- MP Keith Hampson agrees as someone who deals with it first-hand.
Richard Whiteley wraps up the episode as the credits roll.
