A promotional video produced for the Northumberland Business Development Unit highlighting the many reasons why businesses should move to the county. Through a series of montages featuring both still and moving images, the film looks at what Northumberland can offer from location, workforce through to housing, recreational and educational facilities.

Dawn breaking over Holy Island with Lindisfarne Castle in the distance changes to a montage of still images features other sites in Northumberland including the Coquet Valley, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Hexham. A montage featuring both moving and still images showcasing industry in Northumberland both traditional and modern as well as farming, inshore fishing and in his studio a potter creating a teapot. Another montage follows of some of the men who shaped Northumberland beginning with George Stephenson of Wylam and Lord William Armstrong and his Cragside Estate near Rothbury.
A montage of some of Northumberland successful companies begins with craftsmen and women at House of Hardy in Alnwick working to produce fishing rods and reels. At Phoenix clothing factory at Amble women work sowing machines to produce outdoor jackets for the world market while at the Tolag factory at Morpeth computers are being used to produce high precision metalwork.
Flags for countries from around the world who have set up businesses or factory in Northumberland follows including the United States, Canada and Japan. A montage follows of some of these factories including Sancella Ltd from Sweden, Polychrome from Japan, Messer Griesheim from Germany and Bristol-Myers from the United States of America and their factory at Cramlington New Town. A montage of logos for top-brand names all of whom are working successfully in Northumberland features including Boots, Drager, Wilkinson Sword and Alcan.
An emphasis is made on the number of pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries that have opened in the county, eight logos are featured including NL Victor Wolf Ltd, Searle and Glaxochem. Over an history of its development, a photo montage of the Searle factory at Morpeth beginning with aerials of the factory followed by employees at work inside.
The film moves onto explain why Northumberland is a location business should invest in. A map of Europe showing distances between Northumberland and southern areas of Europe followed by an aeroplane taking off from Newcastle Airport and a montage of images of passengers arriving, checking-in and boarding an airplane. An Inter-City 125 train speeds past on its way to London changes to traffic moving along a dual carriageway. At the Port of Blyth an ore carrier is moored along a quayside while cargo is unloaded from a roll-on-roll-off ferry.
A look at the workforce of Northumberland begins with an engineer using a piece tool at an engineering factory. Information is provided on screen about the county’s excellent industrial relations record between worker and employee in Northumberland.
A look at what Northumberland can offer with regards factory locations begins with a modern factory unit currently available and a photo montage of green-field sites in the county that are available for development. A combined harvester works a field near to the Alcan smelting plant at Lynemouth, a site that was developed especially for the company’s needs. On Kielder Water reservoir two speedboats pass, one pulling someone on water skis. Over an image of a factory unit under constriction details of what kind of factory units that are or can be made in Northumberland.
In the distance a large factory unit, over the top details of financial packages that are available to businesses who invest in Northumberland including regional development grants, regional selective assistance and European Community loans. The sequence ends on a photograph of a man in an office speaking with someone about setting up a business in Northumberland.
A look at the environment of Northumberland begins with a car driving along a road in a modern housing estate followed by a montage of images featuring various types of both traditional and modern properties for sale or rent around the county. A second photo montage follows featuring both primary and secondary schools as well as older pupils working with BBC micro computers in a classroom. Photographs of both Durham and Newcastle University highlight higher education opportunities and centres of excellence in the region.
A montage of both still and moving images featuring shopping opportunities in Northumberland begins with stills of the traditional market town of Morpeth followed by shoppers making their way into a modern shopping centre at Cramlington. In Newcastle the Eldon Square shopping centre as well as other outlets on Northumberland Street. Following a Tyne and Wear Metro train travelling along a set of tracks a montage of views inside the Metro Centre at Gateshead.
A montage of still images featuring top class athletes competing at the Gateshead Stadium changes to image of players from Newcastle United Football Club playing at St James Park. Moving images of horse racing taking place at Gosforth Park Racecourse changes to another photomontage of other sports available in the county including bowls, golf and cricket. Other activities also feature in a montage including horse riding, sailing, fishing and rock climbing ending with the water-skier seen previously on Kielder Water. Photographs follow of various signs for country pubs across the county and people enjoying drinks.
The look at the arts in the region begin with actors on the stage of the Theatre Royal in Newcastle performing a scene. This is followed by a montage of rural places to visit including visitors enjoying the Northumberland Show, two men standing beside the Linhope Spout Waterfall, people walking along Hadrian’s Wall, the statue of St Aiden on Lindisfarne and two women looking over an information board on the site of the Flodden Field battlefield. A montage follows if the regions castles including Dunstanburgh, Alnwick and Bamburgh.
Over an image of Warkworth Castle and the nearby river Coquet a final list of reasons why Northumberland is a great place for business. The film ends as it began with Lindisfarne Castle at sunrise and the heraldic shield of the county.
