This episode of Calendar Commentary covers the talks between President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, Crown immunity, and political action occurring at Westminster. It also more briefly covers the Anglo-Irish agreement, troubles in South Africa, and opinions of the shows viewers.
This episode starts with hosts Richard Whiteley and Geoff Druett introducing the topics that will be discussed over the duration of this episode.
The first issue that is discussed in this episode is the Geneva Summit by Richard Whiteley, Whiteley notes that it went well and they have agreed to meet again as well as mentioning that later on three MPs will be on the show to discuss their views on the talks and the implications of the summit for Britain (throughout this discussion the screen cuts to images of Reagan and Gorbachev side by side with the title Geneva Summit).
Richard Whiteley then returns to talks of Britain by bringing up issues with a foreign power, more specifically, the Anglo-Irish agreement signed by Margaret Thatcher and Garett Fitzgerald. Whiteley notes that the treaty gave the Irish government an advisory role in Northern Irelands Government , the Protestant loyalists referred to this agreement as an act of treachery as well as 15 Unionist MPs being willing to resign their seats if Parliament votes in favour of the agreement in coming days.
The show then discusses the troubles in South Africa whilst showing imagery of the destruction that took place there, Richard Whiteley notes on the news blackout being imposed by the South African Government which limits coverage on the subject as well as Margaret Thatcher's lack of enthusiasm when regarding imposing trade sanctions believing it would cause more pain than good.
Next Geoff Druett at a desk in the Studio with three MPs (two live in studio and one in the London studio communicating through a screen). These guests consist of Sir Patrick Wall (Conservative MP for Beverly), Patrick Duffey (Labour MP for Sheffield Attercliffe), and in the London studio John Cartwright (SDPMP for Woolwich and a frontbench foreign affairs spokesman). They discuss the summit, whether they believe it was useful as well as possible solutions they would personally suggest.
Geoff Druett then directs them into a discussion about negotiations taking place in Ireland, they discuss Margaret Thatcher's decision making and Sinn Fein. This segment concludes by briefly discussing if the MPs believe the troubles in South Africa will lead to an ending of white majority rule and whether or not Britain should become involved in these politics at risk of causing economic harm.
The next segment of the show hones in on the letters the show receives from viewers, this week consists of only female viewers who wish to voice their opinions on money and taxes. It is conducted by Richard Whiteley, one example that he speaks on is a Mrs. Jacobs from Hull who complains about the tax situation as well as another viewer thanking the show for allowing viewers to voice their opinions on air. This segment is concluded by Richard Whiteley presenting the address on screen in which these letters can be sent to.
Geoff Druett then introduces a part of the show called Calendar Commentary Private Bill, this section of the episode consists of MPs coming on and discussing a hypothetical bill they wish to enact. This episode focuses on Conal Gegory and his idea of removing crown immunity from prosecution.
The camera pans to Conal Gregory in the studio as he explains crown immunity whilst noting statistics of food poising breaking out in hospitals in previous years and how his hypothetical bill will bring an end to this. This division of the show is wrapped up by Richard Whiteley and Conal Gregory discussing this bill and the money problems that would arise if this bill was to manifest.
The show then returns once more to Geoff Druett who presents Geoffret Smith of the Times to discuss (from the London Studio) the speech of Neil Kinnock in Bournemouth and the ongoing Miners' Strike deliberations. Geoff Druett then notes on the show the House of Commons have recently voted against allowing television cameras into the chamber (and since the latest debate was untelevised he goes on to list some of the key bits that occurred whilst showing images of corresponding people on the screen).
The last segment consists of Whiteley talking about the proposal in parliament to lower the age in which you can stand for parliament from 21 to 18 (he remarks on the large amount of people against this).
Geoff Druett and Richard Whiteley then wrap up the episode and the ending credits roll whilst the theme tune is played and imagery of Westminster Abbey is shown.
